Texas scores 14 unanswered runs to down Illinois, 15-6
LAS VEGAS — No. 15 Texas completed its weekend sweep of the Las Vegas College Baseball Classic field, as the Longhorns pounded Illinois, 15-6, Sunday afternoon to win the tournament's crown.
Texas (9-1) scored 14 unanswered runs, after the Fighting Illini (6-4) took an early 6-1 advantage at Las Vegas Ballpark.
The Longhorns mounted four tallies in the fourth, before putting up a season-best nine-spot in the sixth and adding an insurance run in the seventh.
In the decisive sixth, Texas sent 13 batters to the plate and totaled seven hits.
Freshman designated hitter Adrian Rodriguez delivered a game-tying RBI ground out to level the score, 6-6.
One pitch later, junior Jalin Flores ripped a two-run double to right center field to put the Longhorns ahead for the first time in their Vegas finale.
Following a pair of free passes, sophomore Casey Borba drove in a pair with a single through the left side to extend Texas' lead to 10-6.
Outfielders Tommy Farmer IV and Max Belyeu each registered two-run doubles to punctuate the nine-run frame.
Overall, six different Longhorns notched multi-hit performances, with Belyeu leading the charge. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound slugger posted his fifth career four-hit game and recorded three RBI.
Meanwhile, Borba, Flores and Rodriguez all collected two hits and two RBI.
On the mound, right-hander Max Grubbs (1-0) logged his first win of the year, tossing 4 1/3 innings in relief of southpaw starter Kade Bing. Grubbs did not allow an earned run, striking out three along the way.
Illinois righty Luke Weber (0-2) was charged with the loss after surrendering five runs over 1 2/3 frames.
Following the three-day event, Belyeu, Grubbs, Rodriguez, Ethan Mendoza and Jared Spencer earned All-Tournament honors, while Flores was tabbed MVP.
Flores went 5-for-10 with two homers, four RBI and scored six runs over the weekend.
Texas will look to extend its winning streak to 10 games on Tuesday, as the Longhorns welcome Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to UFCU Disch-Falk Field. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
