Galvan homers for fourth time over last five games in defeat

AUSTIN, Texas — The eighth-ranked University of Texas baseball team dropped its Southeastern Conference home opener to No. 2 LSU, 8-2, on Friday night at UFCU-Disch Falk Field.

LSU southpaw Kade Anderson (5-0) set the tone for the Tigers (22-1, 4-0 SEC) limited the Longhorns (17-3, 3-1 SEC) to just two runs over six innings. The junior recorded eight strikeouts to guide LSU to its 17th straight win.

Texas did strike first off Anderson on an RBI single from shortstop Jalin Flores in the third, but LSU punched back by scoring eight runs over the next four frames.

Catcher Luis Hernandez led the charge for the Tigers, finishing 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI.

Hernandez's two-run blast jumpstarted the visitor's offense in the fourth, before padding the lead with a run-scoring single in the fifth.

With the Longhorns trailing, 4-1, Texas catcher Rylan Galvan smacked a solo shot, leaving the ballpark for the fourth time in the last five games. Galvan's team-leading eighth home run also matched his career best, which he set last season.

Despite the mammoth swing from Galvan, LSU answered with a four-run seventh, which was more than enough cushion for right-hander Zac Cowan.

Cowan yielded just one hit over the final three innings to earn his second save of the year.

Texas starter Jared Spencer (2-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs over five frames. Spencer struck out seven in the defeat.

The Longhorns will look to even the series on Saturday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
