Henry goes 4-for-4 as No. 1/1 Softball beats SFA in five innings
03.25.2025 | Softball
Texas sophomore Kayden Henry turns in her first career 4-hit performance
AUSTIN, Texas – Every finely-tuned engine needs a spark plug to make everything run as smoothly as possible. Tuesday night, Kayden Henry was the spark plug for a Texas offense that collected 12 hits and four stolen bases en route to beating Stephen F. Austin, 11-3, in five innings.
Of Texas' 12 hits in five offensive innings, Henry was credited with a third of her team's hit total as the sophomore out of Dickinson, Texas set a single game career high with a 4-for-4 performance at the dish. She also stole three bases – which tied her single game career high – drove in a run and scored three times, which also tied her single game career high. Not only did Henry extend her active hitting streak to a season-best seven consecutive games – or even extend her on-base streak to 20 consecutive games – but she also bumped her season batting average up from .482 to .506 as a result of career outing.
Henry collected Texas' first hit of the game with a first-inning single to the right-centerfield gap, before becoming the first Longhorn to score when she trotted home from second on a first inning double off the bat of Katie Stewart. During the second inning, Henry, again, showcased her speed as she singled a 1-2 pitch through the left side, then stole second and third bases on consecutive pitches and then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mia Scott to extend Texas' lead out to 6-0.
Rather than scoring the run, Henry, during the third inning, actually drove in on when she doubled home Leighann Goode from third to extend the Longhorns' lead out to 9-2. Two innings later, Henry was the final player to touch home as she scored from third on a SFA throwing error that ended the game.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Everything we try to do is with an end game in mind of getting at least one run every inning, so our opponents have to get two to beat us. And tonight, we were able to use our speed and ability to get on base and accomplish just that. What I liked tonight was the ability for us to score runs without having to get a hit. We got runners on, stole bases and were able to get them over before scoring on sacrifice flies, so we were quite an efficient offense tonight."
GAME NOTES
- With her two-run double in the bottom of the first, Texas sophomore Katie Stewart now has 55 RBI on the season, becoming the first student-athlete in program history to have multiple 55-plus RBI seasons.
- Stewart's 55 RBI so far this season are good enough to tie her with Shannon Rhodes (2021) for eighth on the program's single-season RBI list.
- In the bottom of the second, Texas junior Reese Atwood sent the first pitch of her at bat 256 feet for a solo home run, marking the 47th for her career and tying Lindsey Stephens (2013-16) for second on the program's career home run list.
- With her three stolen bases on the night, Kayden Henry (50-54) now has 50 career stolen bases, joining Mia Scott (53-60) as the only active Longhorn softball student-athletes to be credited with 50-or-more stolen bases.
- As a result of her first-inning single, Kayden Henry extended her on-base streak to 20 consecutive games, joining Joley Mitchell (23) as the only Longhorns with an on-base streak of 20-or-more straight contests this season.
- It's the first time a pair of Longhorns have had an on-base streak span 20-or-more consecutive games since the 2022 season, when Janae Jefferson (24) and McKenzie Parker (22) did so.
- With her pair of RBIs throughout the five-inning affair on Tuesday, Mia Scott became just the fifth student-athlete in program history to reach the 160 career RBI milestone.
- Scott will enter Texas' weekend series in Starkville just six RBI shy of tying Lindsey Stephens for fourth on the program's carer RBI list.
UP NEXT
- Texas (32-2, 5-1) will return to SEC play this weekend, when the top-ranked Longhorns travel to Starkville, Miss., for a three-game series against No. 18/18 Mississippi State (27-6, 5-1) beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 28.
