No. 3 Men’s Golf advances to Match Play at SEC Championship

Maas ties for third in the individual standings at 9-under; Longhorns claim No. 8 seed and face top-seed Auburn in quarterfinals.
SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 7-under-par 273 in the final round of stroke play on Friday to earn its way into the match play portion of the SEC Championship at Sea Island Golf Club. The Longhorns claimed the No. 8 seed in match play and will face top-seed and No. 2 Auburn in the quarterfinals on Saturday, April 26 (6:30 a.m. Central/7:30 a.m. Eastern).
Texas, which began Friday in 11th place in the team standings, moved up four spots during the final round and finished in a tie for seventh with a 54-hole score of 6-under 834 (286-275-273). The Longhorns and Alabama tied for seventh, with the Crimson Tide (279-280-275) earning the No. 7 seed in a tiebreaker based on the cumulative total of the non-counting scores. Texas and Alabama placed two strokes ahead of South Carolina to earn the final two spots in match play, as the Gamecocks carded a three-round total of 4-under 836 (277-278-281).
During Friday's final round of stroke play, the Longhorns counted scores from freshman Daniel Bennett (4-under 66), junior Luke Potter (2-under 68), junior Christiaan Maas (2-under 68) and junior Tommy Morrison (1-over 71).
Auburn earned the top seed in match play with a 54-hole score of 38-under 802 (264-270-268), while No. 7 LSU finished second at 29-under 811 (271-263-277). No. 17 Texas A&M placed third at 23-under 817 (271-274-272).
Auburn's Jackson Koivun claimed medalist honors with a three-round total of 12-under 198 (67-67-64), while Drew Goodman of Oklahoma finished as runner-up at 11-under 199 (66-66-67). Maas posted a 54-hole score of 9-under 201 (66-67-68) and placed in a four-way tie for third place in the individual standings along with Phichaksn Maichon of Texas A&M, Auburn's Carson Bacha and Jay Mendell of LSU.
In addition to the Texas-Auburn matchup, the match-play quarterfinals will include No. 2 seed LSU vs. No. 7 seed Alabama, No. 3 seed Texas A&M vs. No. 6 seed Georgia, and No. 4 seed Oklahoma vs. No. 5 seed Florida. Following the conclusion of the quarterfinals, the match play semifinals will be contested on Saturday afternoon and streamed on SEC Network+. The SEC Championship final is scheduled for Sunday, April 27 (7 a.m. CT) and will be televised by SEC Network.
The Lineup
- Junior Christiaan Maas fired a 2-under 68 on Friday and tied for third in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 9-under 201 (66-67-68). Starting on the back nine, Maas recorded a clean card for the second-straight day with a pair of birdies (holes 15 and 7) in addition to 16 pars. He posted his fifth top-five individual finish in his 11 stroke-play appearances this season.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett registered a 4-under 66 in his third round and jumped 28 spots into a tie for 37th with a three-round score of 1-over 211 (75-70-66). Bennett made birdies on holes 11 and 13 before a bogey on 14 dropped him to 1-under in his round. He responded with birdies on 15 and 18 to make the turn at 3-under. Bennett then had a clean front nine with a birdie on 8 to close out his 4-under 66.
- Junior Luke Potter posted a 2-under 68 on Friday and climbed 17 spots into a tie for 44th with a 54-hole total of 2-over 212 (74-70-68). Potter made a birdie on 11 before a bogey on 12 dropped him back to even-par. He added birdies on holes 15 and 6 to finish out his 2-under 68.
- Junior Tommy Morrison carded a 1-over 71 in his third round and tied for 63rd with a three-round score of 5-over 215 (73-71-71). Morrison recorded three birdies (holes 14, 3 and 4) on Friday.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert tallied a 5-over 75 on Friday and tied for 66th with a 54-hole total of 6-over 216 (73-68-75). He recorded one birdie (hole 5) during his third round.
