RENO, Nevada — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team is in a four-way tie for third place at the conclusion of play on Monday in the NCAA Reno Regional at Montreux Golf and Country Club. The tournament field was only able to complete between six-to-eight holes of the opening round when play was officially suspended at 8:10 p.m. Central (6:10 p.m. Pacific).
Monday's round was scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. Central (8:30 a.m. Pacific), but consistent high winds with gusts as strong as 70 miles per hour forced tournament officials to delay the shotgun start of the round until 6 p.m. Central (4 p.m. Pacific).
The NCAA Reno Regional features 14 teams and five individual players. The top five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, scheduled for May 23-28 at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, Calif.
The Longhorns are currently at 5-over-par as a team through 7-8 holes. Mississippi State (through 6-7 holes) and San Diego (through 7-8 holes) are tied for the lead at 3-over. Texas is in a four-way tie for third place with No. 9 Virginia (through 7-8 holes), BYU (through 6-7 holes) and No. 21 Duke (through 6-7 holes).
Junior Christiaan Maas, one of just six players in the field to post an under-par score on Monday, is tied for third in the individual standings at 1-under through seven holes. Junior Luke Potter is tied for 12th at 1-over through seven holes, and junior Tommy Morrison is tied for 27th at 2-over through seven holes. Freshman Daniel Bennett is tied for 41st at 3-over through eight holes, and sophomore Jack Gilbert is tied for 66th at 5-over through seven holes. San Diego's Ian Maspat holds the individual lead at 3-under though eight holes, while Paul Chang of Virginia is second at 2-under through seven holes.
The NCAA Reno Regional will resume first-round play on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Central (11:30 a.m. Pacific), and tournament officials will attempt to also complete second-round play on Tuesday. The tournament is scheduled to conclude with 18 holes on Wednesday, May 14.
