No. 4 Men’s Golf in sixth after second round at NCAA Championship

Bennett fires a 1-under 71 on Saturday to pace the Longhorns.
CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team posted a 3-over-par 291 on Saturday to rest in sixth place after the second round of the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa. Freshman Daniel Bennett paced the Longhorns on day two with a 1-under 71.
In addition to Bennett's performance, Texas also counted scores in the second round from sophomore Jack Gilbert (1-over 73), junior Christiaan Maas (1-over 73) and junior Luke Potter (2-over 74).
No. 5 Arizona State recorded the round of the day with an 11-under 277 and holds the 36-hole lead in the team standings with a two-round score of 13-under 563 (286-277). No. 6 Oklahoma is second at 10-under 566 (280-286), while No. 1 Auburn is third at 8-under 568 (286-282). The Longhorns are in sixth place with a 36-hole total of even-par 576 (285-291).
Arizona State's Connor Williams (68-67) and Michael La Sasso of Ole Miss (68-67) share the individual lead after the first two rounds with a 36-hole total of 9-under 135. Brendan Valdes of Auburn (69-70) and Texas A&M's Phichaksn Maichon (66-73) are tied for second at 5-under 139.
The 2025 NCAA Championships continue with stroke play for all 30 teams on Sunday, May 25. In Sunday's third round, the Longhorns will be paired with No. 7 Florida and No. 9 Florida State, and tee times will begin at 8:52 a.m. CT (6:52 a.m. PT) from hole 10.
The field will be cut to the top 15 teams following Sunday's third round. The fourth and final round of stroke play is set for Monday, May 26, and the individual NCAA champion will be crowned following the completion of 72 holes of stroke play.
The top eight teams following Monday's final round of stroke play will advance to the NCAA Match Play Championships. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Tuesday, May 27, while the NCAA Championship match is scheduled for Wednesday, May 28.
The Lineup
- Freshman Daniel Bennett fired a 1-under 71 in the second round and climbed 34 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 45th place with a 36-hole total of 2-over 146 (75-71). Starting on hole 10, Bennett was 2-over through his first five holes before making birdies on holes 15 and 17 to make the turn at even-par in his round. After a bogey on 1, he made birdies on holes 4 and 6 and closed out his round with three-straight pars.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert carded a 1-over 73 on Saturday and is tied for 33rd with a two-round score of 1-over 145 (72-73). Starting on hole 10, Gilbert tallied 10 consecutive pars to open his round before making birdie on hole 2. After bogeys on holes 3 and 6, he made a birdie on 7 before a bogey on 8 closed out his round.
- Junior Luke Potter posted a 2-over 74 in his second round and is tied for 33rd with a 36-hole total of 1-over 145 (71-74). Starting on hole 10, Potter made the turn at 1-over and was 4-over through his first 14 holes. He rallied to make birdies on holes 6 and 8 and pars on 7 and 9 to finish out his round.
- Junior Christiaan Maas recorded a 1-over 73 on Saturday and is tied for 97th with a two-round score of 7-over 151 (78-73). Starting on hole 10, Maas made the turn at 3-over in his round. He registered three birdies (holes 2, 3 and 9) against one bogey (hole 4) over the final nine holes to close out his round.
- Junior Tommy Morrison carded a 7-over 79 in his second round and is tied for 45th with a 36-hole total of 2-over 146 (67-79).
