Scottie Scheffler earns dominant win at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson
05.04.2025 | Men's Golf
Former Longhorn claimed his 14th career PGA TOUR victory and tied the lowest 72-hole total in TOUR history.
MCKINNEY, Texas — Former University of Texas star Scottie Scheffler posted an 8-under 63 on Sunday afternoon to record an eight-stroke win in the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch. Scheffler earned his 14th career PGA TOUR victory and first of the 2025 season.
Scheffler registered a four-round score of 31-under 253 (61-63-66-63), matching the low 72-hole score in PGA TOUR history. The 253 total tied the scoring mark set by Ludvig Aberg at the 2023 RSM Classic and Justin Thomas at the 2017 Sony Open in Hawaii.
Scheffler became the first player to go wire-to-wire on the PGA TOUR since Lee Hodges won the 2023 3M Open. Scheffler is the third wire-to-wire winner in CJ Cup Byron Nelson history, joining Mark Hayes (1976) and Tom Watson (1980). In addition, his eight-stroke win (Erik van Rooyen was second at 23-under) is the largest margin of victory of the 2025 season on the PGA TOUR. It is also the second-largest margin of victory in CJ Cup Byron Nelson history, behind only Sam Snead's 10-stroke win in 1957.
The tournament victory marked a full-circle moment in Scheffler's golf progression. Scheffler became the first Dallas-area high school golfer to win the tournament since 2007. He made his PGA TOUR debut at the 2014 Byron Nelson tournament, when he was a 17-year-old amateur and a senior in high school. Scheffler received a sponsor exemption to that event and made the 36-hole cut, eventually finishing in a tie for 22nd place.
The CJ Cup Byron Nelson marked a showcase for The University of Texas golf program. The tournament included six former Longhorns (Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Jhonattan Vegas, Pierceson Coody, Doug Ghim and Beau Hossler) in the field, and all six made the 36-hole cut. Spieth finished fourth at 19-under 265 (69-67-67-62), and Vegas tied for 13th at 16-under 268 (63-69-67-69). In addition, current UT junior Tommy Morrison earned a sponsor exemption and posted a two-round score of 2-over 144 (74-70).
Scheffler's win marked the 107th official PGA TOUR victory for The University of Texas Men's Golf program, accomplished by 17 different individuals in the 98-year history of the TOUR.
