No. 2 Softball sweeps doubleheader against Ohio State and Northern Illinois to round out Bevo Classic

The Longhorns went 5-0 on the weekend and improve to 9-1 overall.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 2 Texas Softball rounded out the Bevo Classic with a doubleheader sweep over Ohio State and Northern Illinois Sunday at McCombs Field. Texas downed Ohio State, 7-4, before defeating Northern Illinois, 9-1 (6 inn.) in the finale.
The Longhorns went 5-0 at the Bevo Classic and improve to 9-1 overall with three top-25 victories. Texas run-ruled opponents in four of five games over the weekend. Texas is 5-0 at home to start the season as well.
Game 1
In a rematch with the Buckeyes, Texas defeated Ohio State, 7-4.
RHP Cambria Salmon (2-0) earned her second win of the season. The sophomore made her third start of the season and twirled 5.1 frames, totaling four strikeouts and limiting Ohio State to two runs on four hits while working around a pair of walks. Salmon pitched four scoreless innings before giving up a solo home run in the fifth. She was replaced in the sixth by freshman RHP Hannah Wells, who then retired three-straight batters to close the top half. Wells tossed the next 1.2 innings and fanned three batters while not allowing a base hit. With two outs in the top of the seventh, a Texas throwing error allowed two more runs to come through for the Buckeyes, trimming the UT lead to 7-4. Salmon re-entered the game in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded, forcing an unassisted ground out to freshman Jaycie Nichols at third base to secure the victory.
Offensively, senior catcher Reese Atwood and freshman utility Alisa Sneed led Texas with two RBI apiece. Atwood finished 1-for-2 with a two-RBI single (first inning) and walk. Sneed went 1-for-2 with an RBI single (fifth inning) to short and added another RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the first.
Wells smothered her third home run of the season on a solo home run in the fourth. All three of Wells' collegiate hits have now gone for home runs. Senior left fielder Kaiah Altmeyer (1-for-2) had an RBI single to short in the first. Senior right fielder Ashton Maloney and Jaycie Nichols each recorded hits. Junior shortstop Viviana Martinez knocked in a run on a ground out in the fifth, scoring Kaydee Bennett from third.

Top 6: Ohio State cut UT's lead to 7-2 on a solo home run.
Top 7: Ohio State scored two additional runs on a throwing error.
Game 2
Fueled by junior RHP Teagan Kavan's season-high 12-strikeout gem, Texas recorded its fourth run-rule victory of the weekend in the 9-1 (6 inn.) win against Northern Illinois. Texas has five run-rule wins on the year.
Kavan pitched a dominant complete-game shutout vs. the Huskies – her second complete-game shutout of the season. In six innings of work, Kavan struck out a season-high 12 batters and issued zero walks. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native restricted Northern Illinois to five hits and zero earned runs. Kavan retired the first five batters she faced and had three 1-2-3 innings.
It was a family affair for Katie Stewart as she faced off against her older sister Danielle Stewart, who is a senior pitcher/first baseman for Northern Illinois. In the first inning, Katie Stewart got to bat against Danielle Stewart, who made the start in the circle for the Huskies. Katie Stewart then bashed a two-run home run to right center to give Texas a 3-0 lead.

Freshman MaTaia Lawson had a team-high three RBI after going 2-for-4 with a solo home run – her first career home run. Stewart finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk and two-run home run. It was her fifth home run of the season and fifth multi-hit game of the season, including her third-straight game with multiple hits. Katie's Altmeyer had her third multi-hit game of the season after going 2-for-2 with an RBI and walk. Freshman Jaycie Nichols hit her first career home run on a solo shot in the fifth. Senior Kaydee Bennett had an RBI single to right in the sixth for the walk-off, run-rule victory. Senior Leighann Goode added a base hit. Reese Atwood plated a run on a sacrifice fly in the first.

Bottom 6: MaTaia Lawson hit her first career home run for an 8-1 lead.
Bottom 6: Kaydee Bennett's RBI single to right scored Adayah Wallace to seal the 9-1 victory in six.
Up next, Texas travels west for the DeMarini Invitational hosted by Stanford on Feb. 20-22 at Stanford Softball Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif. Texas will open the tournament with a ranked doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 20 vs. No. 15 Arizona and No. 12 Stanford. Texas will play Arizona at 2 p.m. CT followed by a 5 p.m. duel against Stanford.
