Texas run-ruled Ole Miss, 15-3, in five innings for its second-straight SEC sweep.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 Texas Softball run-ruled Ole Miss, 15-3, in five innings to clinch a series sweep Sunday afternoon at McCombs Field. The Longhorns increased their win streak to 24 games, which ties the program record set by the 2006 team.
Texas moves to 26-1 overall, 6-0 in conference play and 15-0 at home. Texas has swept both of its SEC opponents this season (No. 24 South Carolina on the road, Ole Miss at home). The Longhorns run-ruled Ole Miss in two of three games and have run-ruled opponents 14 times this season.
Junior RHP Teagan Kavan (11-0) carded her eighth complete game victory of the season after restraining the Rebels to three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Only one hit – a double – went for extra bases. After giving up two runs in the first, Kavan pitched three-consecutive 1-2-3 innings, retiring 10-straight batters.
Texas collected 12 hits on the afternoon, outhitting Ole Miss at a 12-8 clip. UT has registered 10-plus hits in 10 games this season. Texas has scored 10-plus runs in 13 games. 13 different Longhorns reached base and nine tallied at least one base hit.
Junior center fielder Kayden Henry starred offensively with a team-high three RBI and three runs scored after going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, a double and walk. Junior first baseman Katie Stewart went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Senior left fielder Kaiah connected on a two-RBI single, junior shortstop Viviana Martinez had a two-RBI single and sophomore pinch hitter Taylor Anderson notched a two-RBI single. Senior second baseman Leighann Goode compiled a multi-hit performance after going 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman third baseman Jaycie Nichols went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Senior right fielder Ashton Maloney and pinch hitter Adayah Wallace also totaled a base hit apiece.
Ole Miss jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a one-run single and bases-loaded walk. Texas answered in the bottom frame on an Ole Miss fielding error that allowed Henry to score and bring the Horns within one run.
The Longhorns put together a six-run second inning that began with freshman designated player Hannah Wells scoring on a fielding error with the bases loaded to tie the game at 2-2. Henry drove in a run on a fielder's choice that scored Martinez to gather a 3-2 lead, and then Nichols scored on a wild pitch from third base for a 4-2 advantage. The scoring continued as Goode knocked an RBI double to the top of the left field wall – a few inches short from going over the fence – to send Henry home for a 5-2 lead. Altmeyer ripped a single up the middle to drive in Goode and Martinez roped a single up the middle to push home Altmeyer for a 7-1 lead.
Texas manufactured an eight run third frame, putting the Horns ahead 15-2. It all began with Henry's two-run double to left center followed by Altmeyer driving in her second run of the game on a groundout to first base. Off the bat of Stewart, Texas moved its lead to 11-1 on her RBI single through the right side that beat the shift. A Martinez RBI single and an Anderson two-RBI single granted UT a 15-2 edge. Ole Miss added a third run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly.
