Longhorns overcome pair of deficits to record third consecutive comeback win
AUSTIN, Texas — Behind a six-run sixth, No. 2 Texas topped Texas State, 10-8, in front of 7,765 fans at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.
Ethan Mendoza delivered the go-ahead two-run double in the decisive frame, as the Longhorns (24-4) overcame a pair of deficits to notch their third consecutive come-from-behind win.
Mendoza finished with three extra-base hits and three RBI, capping off his standout performance with his career-high sixth home run in the eighth.
Aiden Robbins and Casey Borba also left the yard, launching their co-team-best 10th blasts.
Robbins' first-inning two-run jack answered Texas State's three-spot in the opening frame. Meanwhile, Borba's 443-foot solo shot sparked the crooked number.
After Borba and Mendoza pushed Texas in front in the sixth, Carson Tinney followed with an RBI single to pad the advantage to 7-5. Anthony Pack Jr. punctuated the sixth, plating a pair of runs with a base hit.
The Longhorns used seven pitchers on the evening, highlighted by a trio of freshmen.
Brody Walls (1-0) earned his first collegiate win, punching out a pair in a scoreless sixth.
Fellow rookie Brett Crossland entered in the seventh and retired five of the six batters he faced to provide a bridge to Sam Cozart.
Cozart (2) set down the side on eight pitches to lock down Texas' second victory over the Bobcats (19-9) in the last three weeks.
As a staff, the Longhorns totaled nine strikeouts and didn't issue a walk.
Up next, Texas travels to take on South Carolina at Founders Park. The three-game set begins at 6 p.m. CT / 7 p.m. ET on Thursday.
