Rookie right-handed pitcher garners first career weekly league honor
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Longhorns standout Sam Cozart was tabbed the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Cozart pitched five innings of one-run baseball, retiring 15 of the 16 batters he faced in a 16-3 run-rule win over Houston Christian at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on March 3.
The right-hander set down 14 straight hitters to open the evening before allowing his lone hit on a solo shot in the fourth.
Cozart struck out six and did not issue a free pass. He tossed 52 of his 73 pitches for strikes.
The 6-foot-6, 260-pound hurler is the third Longhorn to collect an SEC weekly honor in 2026, joining Dylan Volantis (Feb. 16) and Temo Becerra (March 3).
Following its 15th straight victory to open the season, Texas plays its first true road contest against Texas State on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Bobcat Ballpark.
