Bennett fires a 4-under 68 and the Longhorns card impressive team score of 11-under 277 on Saturday.
CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team posted an 11-under-par 277 on Saturday to climb into a tie for second place after the second round of the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa. Sophomore Daniel Bennett registered a 4-under 68 to lead the Longhorns on Saturday.
In addition to Bennett's effort, Texas also counted scores in the second round from graduate Matt Comegys (3-under 69), senior Christiaan Maas (3-under 69) and senior Tommy Morrison (1-under 71).
No. 1 Auburn fired a 16-under 274 in Saturday's morning wave and holds an eight-stroke cushion in the team standings with a 36-hole total of 20-under 556 (284-272). Texas (287-277) and No. 11 Vanderbilt (287-277) are tied for second at 12-under 564, and No. 5 Oklahoma State (295-274) and No. 30 UCLA (280-289) are tied for fourth at 7-under 569.
"I thought it was an outstanding round," said Texas head coach John Fields. "The truth is all of our guys are playing solid golf. We just need to build on this momentum and go after it tomorrow and the next day. Auburn set the pace with a great round themselves today, and we're eight shots back of the lead. If that's the case, we've got something to shoot at. We need to try to get ourselves in position to win the medal-play aspect of this golf tournament. That is what we need to be focused on right now, and we're certainly capable of doing that."
Arizona's Filip Jakubcik tallied a 6-under 64 in the second round and holds a two-stroke lead in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 10-under 134 (68-66). William Jennings of Alabama (66-70) and Malan Potgieter of Louisiana (68-68) are tied for second at 8-under 136. There are a trio of players tied for fourth at 7-under 137 that includes Connor Williams (Arizona State), Josiah Gilbert (Auburn) and Jon Ed Steed (Vanderbilt). Morrison is the top Longhorn on the individual leaderboard after 36 holes in a tie for 13th at 4-under 140 (69-71).
The 2026 NCAA Championships continue with stroke play for all 30 teams on Sunday, May 31. In Sunday's third round, the Longhorns will be paired with Auburn and Vanderbilt, and tee times will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT (6:30 a.m. PT) from hole 1.
The field will be cut to the top 15 teams following Sunday's third round. The fourth and final round of stroke play is set for Monday, June 1, and the individual NCAA champion will be crowned following the completion of 72 holes of stroke play.
The top eight teams following Monday's final round of stroke play will advance to the NCAA Match Play Championships. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Tuesday, June 2, while the NCAA Championship match is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3.
