Boone strikes out seven as Longhorns down Purdue

AUSTIN, Texas -- Sophomore Randy Boone (Yoakum, Texas) struck out seven over seven innings and the Longhorns offense plated seven runs with two outs as No. 1 Texas (19-1) earned a 9-1 victory over Purdue (1-6) in front of 4,984 fans at Disch-Falk Field on Friday, March 11.
Purdue jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first behind a pair of singles, including a two-out hit from John Hunter after Mitch Hilligoss led off the game with a base hit and moved to second on a groundout. Immediately answering in the bottom of the frame, the Longhorns plated three runs to grab a 3-1 advantage as a walk and fielder's choice combined with a sacrifice fly and consecutive two-out, RBI-hits from Thomas Incaviglia (Monterey, Calif.) and Nick Peoples (Round Rock, Texas). The game then settled into a pitcher's duel as Boone and Purdue starter Scott Byrnes held the respective offenses in check through the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a RBI-single from Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas) to make it a 4-1 game.
Following a scoreless sixth and top of the seventh, Texas rallied with two outs after Calvin Beamon (Aurora, Colo.) reached on an error and Robby Hudson (Redlands, Calif.) followed with a sacrifice to put a runner in scoring position. The Horns then came up with four consecutive hits following a strikeout to bring home a trio of runs in front of a double off the bat of Chance Wheeless (Round Rock, Texas) that scored a pair and pushed UT on top by a score of 9-1. From there, Texas relievers Buck Cody (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Jordon Street (Austin, Texas) worked one shutout frame apiece to close out the game and give the Horns their 20th consecutive win at home dating back to 2004. Earning his third win of the year was Boone, who allowed only two hits after the first inning and matched his career-long for innings pitched with seven, while Byrnes incurred the loss despite striking out six and walking only one over 6.2 frames.
Paving the way for the Texas offense, which tallied 11 hits on the evening, was Stubbs, who collected one hit while scoring three times, driving in one run and swiping a pair of bases, Johnston, who went 2-for-4 with one run scored and three RBI, and Incaviglia, who turned in a two-hit outing while scoring twice and driving in two runs. Purdue's attack, meanwhile, was headlined by Mike Coles, who reached base three times with a pair of walks and a single, and Hunter, who drove in the Boilermaker's lone run. Of additional note for UT, both Peoples and Wheeless extended their current hit streaks to career-long eight and five games, respectively.
The Longhorns and Boilermakers resume this three-game series at Disch-Falk Field on Saturday, March 12 at 2 p.m. Central.
