Baseball rebounds for 13-8 win over San Diego

ROUND ROCK, Texas -- Sparked by a six-run outburst in the fourth inning, The University of Texas posted a 13-8 win over the University of San Diego in collegiate baseball action Saturday afternoon at The Dell Diamond.
With one out and the score tied 3-3 in the fourth inning, Kyle Russell started a rally with a triple to the wall in centerfield. Chance Wheeless plated Russell with a sacrifice squeeze bunt and reached first on a throwing error on the play. Michael Demperio logged his first career hit with a bunt single and Nick Peoples pushed the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Jordan Danks kept the rally alive with a single up the middle to score Demperio and Wheeless. Danks stole second base and scored on a double down the leftfield line by Preston Clark. Bradley Suttle capped the rally with a home run to leftfield, staking the Longhorns to a 9-3 lead.
Texas drew first blood with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Pat McCrory singled to the right centerfield gap. Travis Tucker singled through the right side of the infield and Russell walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Demperio logged his first career RBI, drawing a walk to plate McCrory. Peoples followed with a single up the middle to drive in two, giving the Longhorns to a 3-0 cushion.
San Diego (4-1) shaved two runs off the UT lead in the top of the third. With two outs, James Meador and Steve Buschini drew walks and a wild pitch put runners at second and third. Logan Gelbrich plated a pair with a single to centerfield.
The Toreros tied the game in the top fourth inning as Sean Nicol blasted a leadoff home run over the left centerfield gap.
The Toreros manufactured a run in the top of the sixth. Nicol lead off the inning with a single to leftfield, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a double to the left centerfield gap by Justin Snyder, trimming the lead to 9-4.
San Diego added a run in the top of the seventh as Buschini hit a home run that just cleared the rightfield wall, closing the margin to 10-5.
Texas put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch hitter Russell Moldenhauer drew a leadoff walk. Wheeless singled to centerfield and Demperio drew a walk to load the bases. Peoples cleared the base paths with a three-run double to the centerfield wall.
Peoples led Texas offense with a career-high five RBI. He went 2-for-4 with a double and a sacrifice bunt. Clark went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and recorded his first-ever two double game. Suttle went 2-for-5 with one home run and three RBI.
Abruzzo led the Toreros offensive attack, going 2-for-5 with one home run and three RBI. Metzger went 3-for-5 and Nicol was 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs scored and an RBI.
Adrian Alaniz (1-0) picked up the win in relief for Texas. He pitched 4.0 innings, yielding three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four.
Josh Romanski (0-1) was saddled with the loss. He allowed nine runs, four earned, on nine hits and two walks while striking out three in 4.0 innings.
The Longhorns and Toreros wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest at The Dell Diamond.
