Baseball takes series from Miami (Ohio) with rain-shortened 10-4 win

AUSTIN, Texas -- Nick Peoples and Travis Tucker had three hits apiece to lead The University of Texas to a rain-shortened win over Miami (Ohio) University in collegiate baseball action Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The contest was called in the bottom half of the fifth inning due to rain and unplayable field conditions.
Peoples went 3-for-3 with two doubles, one triple, three runs scored and three RBI. Tucker was 3-for-4 with one run and four RBI.
Miami (3-6) jumped to an early lead with one run in the second inning. J.D. Mynhier led off the frame with a double to leftfield, moved to third on a groundout by Jeff Carroll and scored on a single by Blake Chaffee.
No. 12 Texas (15-7) responded with six runs in the bottom half of the second. Kyle Russell singled and Russell Moldenhauer walked to start the inning. A wild pitch pushed runners to second and third and Josh Prince broke the scoring seal with an RBI single, plating Russell. A fielder's choice groundout by Preston Clark put runners at the corners. Peoples doubled down the leftfield line, scoring Moldenhauer. Tucker followed with a two-run single, driving in Clark and Peoples. Jordan Dunks doubled to the right centerfield gap, plating Tucker. Suttle finished off the rally with a single to centerfield to drive in Danks, staking Texas to a 6-1 lead.
The RedHawks scored three runs in the third inning with a two-run, pinch-hit double by Dan Leonard and an RBI groundout by Carroll, cutting the Texas lead to 6-4.
The Longhorns tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third. Josh Prince walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Clark. Peoples tripled to the right centerfield wall to push Prince across and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tucker increasing UT's advantage to 8-4.
Texas completed the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Clark led off the inning with a double down the leftfield line and scored on double to leftfield by Peoples. Tucker singled to shortstop, driving in Peoples before the tarps were pulled on the field after 2 hours and three minutes of play. There was a 36 minute delay before the contest was finally called.
Joseph Krebs (3-0) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. He allowed two hits while striking out one.
Jeff Day (0-2) was saddled with the loss for Miami. He allowed six runs on six hits and two walks over 1.2 innings.
In addition to Peoples and Tucker, Suttle and Russell both had multiple hit games for the Longhorns as both went 2-for-3. It marked Suttle's 14th multiple hit game of the season.
Jordan Petraitis went 3-for-3 with one run scored to lead Miami's offensive attack.
Texas returns to action on Wednesday with the Longhorns hosting Winthrop University in a 6:05 p.m. contest at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
