VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. -- Texas freshman Cody Gribble shot a 4-under 66 and sophomore Dylan Frittelli carded a 2-under 68, as the ninth-ranked Longhorns placed second overall Tuesday in the rain-shortened Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at the par 70, 7,204-yard Old Overton Country Club.
With the tournament's opening two rounds completely washed out by inclement weather on Monday, the 12 participating teams played 18 holes on Tuesday to determine the tournament titlists. Host Alabama shot a collective 7-under 273 in the only round of play to take the tournament team title, and Texas took second just three shots behind the Crimson Tide with a 4-under 276. It marks UT's third top-four team finish in as many outings this fall.
East Tennessee State and UNLV tied for third place at even par, and Louisville rounded out the top five at one-over par. Alabama's Hunter Hamrick shot a five-under 65 to edge the Longhorns' Gribble for medalist honors.
Gribble (Dallas, Texas) carded a 34 on the front nine behind birdies at the first, sixth and seventh holes. After carding bogeys at Nos. 10 and 11, Gribble finished his round by sinking birdies on five of his last seven holes to finish with a 32 on the back nine and his 4-under 66 on the day. In his first collegiate tournament last month, Gribble placed third at the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational.
Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa) started with a 33 on the front nine behind birdies at the fifth, sixth and eighth holes. He added a birdie at the 15th hole to finish with a 2-under 68 and tie for fourth place. Senior Lance Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) sank birdies at the first, 12th, 14th and 15th holes to tie for 16th place at even par.
Junior Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) fired a 2-over 72 in the tournament's lone round and tied for 29th place. Sophomore Brett Spencer (Plano, Texas) sank an eagle at the sixth hole, a par four at 331 yards, and added a birdie at the 15th hole. Spencer tied for 44th place with a 4-over 74.
Texas resumes competition on Sunday, Oct. 18 at the UTSA Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio.
POST-ROUND QUOTES
Texas head coach John Fields
"Our team responded well to the challenges. It was an 18-hole tournament today, and though we did not catch Alabama, the guys played exceptional golf through a difficult stretch on the back nine. Cody Gribble was outstanding, with birdies on five of his last seven holes. Every week, we are going to experience a different line-up. I'm proud of our young men for overcoming the circumstances we were handed this week."
