Baseball suffers sweep at Kansas with 4-3 loss

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The No. 1 Texas Longhorns suffered their first-ever series sweep at Hoglund Ballpark, falling to the Kansas Jayhawks 4-3 on Sunday. The Longhorns lost all three games by one run.
Kansas (13-7, 3-0 Big 12) drew first blood with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Tony Thompson was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning and the Jayhawks loaded the bases with a single up the middle by Jimmy Waters and a bunt single down the third-base line by Preston Land. The Jayhawks broke the scoring seal with a 160-foot single to centerfield by Nick Faunce, plating Thompson. With the bases still juiced, Texas starter Cole Green walked Jason Brunansky to drive in Waters. David Narodowski capped off the really with a dribbler down the third-base line that was fielded by Green with no chance of making a play, allowing Land to score and giving Kansas a 3-0 lead.
Texas (14-6, 2-4 Big 12) shaved a run off the lead in the top of the fifth. Preston Clark reached on a fielding error by Narodowski, the Kansas shortstop. Brandon Loy singled through the left side of the infield and a groundout by Travis Tucker pushed the runners to second and third. Kansas starting pitcher Lee Ridenhour threw a wild pitch allowing Clark to score.
The Longhorns cut the lead to 3-2 when Brandon Belt tripled down the rightfield line and scored on a groundout by Kevin Keyes.
Texas knotted the score at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. Clark hit a leadoff single through the right side and was replaced at first when Loy's sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in a putout at second base. Loy moved to third on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout by Tim Maitland and scored on a single to rightfield by Tucker.
Kansas reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Brian Heere hit a leadoff double off Texas reliever Taylor Jungmann, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Robby Price and scored on a sacrifice fly by Buck Afenir.
Jungmann (3-2) was saddled with the loss for Texas. He allowed one run on two hits over 2.0 innings. Austin Dicharry worked 2.0 hitless, shutout innings, allowing one walk while striking out one. Keith Shinaberry got the Longhorns out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning, inducing a double play and a groundout in his only inning of work. Green allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three as UT's starter.
Travis Blankenship (3-0) got the win for Kansas, retiring the only two batters he faced. Paul Smyth allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save of the series and his sixth of the season.
Texas got two hits apiece from Belt, Clark and Loy.
Narodowski, Heere and Land all logged two hits for Kansas.
Texas returns to UFCU Disch-Falk Field for a 6 p.m. contest against Dallas Baptist on Tuesday.
