No. 10 Men's Golf takes third at Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- Texas freshman Cody Gribble shot his second even-par 70 in as many days to help the 10th-ranked Longhorns to a third-place finish in the 15-team Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational at the par 70, 7,205-yard Olympia Fields Country Club.
The Longhorns shot a 14-over 294 in Sunday's final round to take third place with a 35-over 875 for the tournament. Arizona State, who led Texas by four shots heading into the final round, took the team title at 30-over par. Oklahoma State took second at 32-over par, and the Longhorns finished three shots behind the Cowboys in third.
No. 1 Stanford finished one shot behind Texas and placed fourth at 36-over par, and Florida State took fifth at 37-over par. UT finished ahead of four top-10 teams, including the aforementioned top-ranked Cardinal, sixth-ranked tournament host Illinois, seventh-ranked Georgia and eighth-ranked Augusta State. Georgia's Harris English and Oklahoma State's Trent Whitekiller tied for medalist honors at one-over par, just two shots ahead of the Longhorns' freshman, Gribble.
Playing in his first collegiate event did little to faze Gribble (Dallas, Texas), who would have scored his first sub-70 college round if not for a bogey at the 18th hole. Gribble sank four birdies in Sunday's final round after notching four in the first two rounds combined. He finished in a tie for third place at three-over par.
With one birdie on the day, junior Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) carded a five-over 75 on Sunday and tied for 17th place at nine-over par. Sophomore Brett Spencer (Plano, Texas) shaved a stroke off of his second round and signed for a four-over 74 in the final round. Spencer tied for 28th place at 12-over par.
Sophomore Adam Wennerstrom sank one birdie on the day and finished with a five-over 75 in round three. Wennerstrom (Austin, Texas) tied for 33rd place at 13-over par. Senior Charlie Holland (Dallas, Texas) carded an eight-over 78 in round three and finished in 55th place at 20-over par.
Texas returns to competition on Oct. 12 at the Jerry Pate Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.

Our guys did a good job this week at Olympia Fields. This course is a real U.S. Open test that will make our players better. There are players on our team who can win every time we play, but it will take some time for us to figure it out. When we do, these guys will be resilient and capable of handling every aspect of winning. It is in their hands, and our at-home qualifying events will continue to be intense. I am very pleased with our young players, and Cody Gribble celebrated his birthday during his first collegiate golf tournament. His top-three finish was outstanding.
