RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- No. 9 Texas wrapped up its first team title of the season Tuesday afternoon with a 12-under 276 in the final round of the Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club.
Texas took first place at 42-under par in the 15-team event, six shots ahead of No. 1 Oklahoma State. Clemson took third at 21-under par, and Northwestern placed fourth at 1-under par. Georgia Tech rounded out the top-five at 9-under par.
UT freshman Cody Gribble placed second at 14-under par, three shots behind tournament medalist Kevin Tway of Oklahoma State, and sophomore Dylan Frittelli added a fourth-place finish at 11-under par. With junior Bobby Hudson tying for seventh at 8-under par, Texas lands three players in the final top-10 for the first time since March 2008 at the Fresno State Lexus Classic.
The victory is the Longhorns' first since November 2008, when Texas captured the 19-team Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational. It marks the Horns' sixth top-four team finish in seven outings this season.
After shooting rounds of 67 and 65 to open the tournament, Gribble (Dallas, Texas) carded a 2-under 70 in Tuesday's final round to secure his second runner-up finish and his fourth top-three finish in six starts this season. With a 14-under 202 for the tournament, Gribble took second place behind Oklahoma State's Kevin Tway, who finished with a 17-under 199.
Sophomore Dylan Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa) shot a season-best 5-under 67 in the final round to notch his third top-five finish of the season, as he tied for fourth with an 11-under 205 for the tournament. It marks the third tournament (Jerry Pate Intercollegiate, UTSA Lone Star Invite) in which Gribble and Frittelli both secured top-five finishes.
Coming off of a win at the Mauna Lani Invitational earlier this month, junior Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) shot a 1-under 71 in the final round to secure his second consecutive top-10 finish. Hudson tied for seventh overall with an 8-under 208 for the tournament.
Senior Lance Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) shot an even-par 72 in the final round and tied for 15th overall with a 5-under 211, good for his top finish of the season. Senior Charlie Holland (Dallas, Texas) carded the second-lowest round of the day for Texas with a 4-under 68. Holland finished in a tie for 19th place at 3-under for the tournament.
POST-ROUND COMMENTS
Texas head coach John Fields
On the win: I've told our guys going into this year that we had the team to win this year, but we just did not know which combination it would be that could win every time. This is the seventh combination we've played with this season, and this group picked up our first win. These guys are confident that we have that kind of team, one that can win more events. We felt strongly that we could win.
Dylan came up big for us today. His play all season long has been outstanding. We have been counting on him. I'm really happy with Charlie Holland's comeback today. He has had great final rounds in his last two events, and we're thrilled about that. Bobby Hudson has been solid. He has had a fantastic attitude.
On Cody Gribble: Obviously, Cody is a great young player. Great players are not happy when they're not playing well, and he was looking for a rebound (after his last two events). We were awfully happy to have that showing from him this week, from a team perspective. It was awesome, and his entire season has been as advertised. He played great golf from the start.
