AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 7 Texas Longhorns had a 15-game win streak versus the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles snapped in a 3-2 loss at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.
Oral Roberts starter Mark Guest went 5.2 innings, allowing one run on six hits while pinch hitter Jared Schlehuber hit a solo home run in his only plate appearance to help ORU improve to 11-10 on the season. Texas fell to 18-7 before hitting the road for a three-game series against Oklahoma beginning Thursday.
In only his third appearance and second start of the season, starter Sam Stafford pitched three innings for Texas, allowing one run on two hits while striking out eight. Offensively, Brandon Loy lead the way with three hits, a walk and a run scored. Tant Shepherd and Kyle Lusson each recorded an RBI for Texas.
After a shaky start, allowing walks to the first two batters, Stafford struck out three batters in the first before striking out the side in the second inning. However, in the top of the third a walk to Joey Winiecki and a Tyler Garewal single put runners on the corners with one out. Tyler Saladino followed with an RBI single to give the Golden Eagles a one-run lead before Stafford struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
The Horns threatened in the bottom half of the inning after singles by Cameron Rupp and Cohl Walla with no outs, but Guest retired the next three batters to keep it a 1-0 game. ORU threatened again in the top of the fifth with runners on first and third with two outs, but new pitcher Hoby Milner got a ground out to end the inning.
ORU's Colby Price singled to start the top of the sixth before Milner struck out the next two batters. However, Milner was unable to escape the inning, walking the next two batters to load the bases before Austin Dicharry entered the game. Dicharry walked Garewal to extend the Golden Eagle's lead to 2-0 before a strikeout ended the inning.
Texas responded in the bottom half of the sixth after a Rupp single started the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Shepherd moved Rupp to second before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Following a strikeout, Kyle Lusson singled home Rupp to cut the lead in half.
After three strikeouts from Dicharry in the top of the seventh to keep it a one-run game, Texas got a two-out RBI single from Shepherd to tie the game at two, scoring Loy who reached on an infield single with one out. But ORU answered in the top of the eighth with a solo home run from Schlehuber, giving the Golden Eagles a 3-2 lead.
Texas was unable to score in the final two innings as relief pitcher Jeff Burleson pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing one run on just two hits while striking out four. Burleson improved to 3-2 on the season with the win, while Dicharry dropped to 0-3.
Six Golden Eagle's recorded singles, while Saladino and Schlehuber led the way with an RBI a piece. Kendal Carrillo, Andrew McKirahan and Stayton Thomas were the other Texas pitchers as the five Texas' pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts.
