No. 3 Baseball wins pitching duel versus No. 9 Rice, 2-1

HOUSTON -- The No. 3 Texas Longhorns won a pitching duel against the No. 9 Rice Owls in collegiate baseball action at the Houston College Classic on Friday evening at Minute Maid Park.
Taylor Jungmann allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out eight over 7.2 innings as the starter.
Chance Ruffin (1-1) picked up the win in relief, allowing one hit and striking out three over 1.1 scoreless innings. Ruffin fanned all three batters he faced in the ninth.
Texas (7-2) broke the scoring seal in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jordan Etier hit a leadoff single to rightfield. He was replaced at first base by Tant Shepherd who was unable to get down a successful sacrifice bunt. Shepherd stole second base and with two outs, Cameron Rupp plated him with a single up the middle.
Jungmann walked two batters in the first inning, but cruised through the next six innings, facing just 19 batters, one over the minimum.
Rice (5-5) finally scored on Jungmann in the top of the eighth. Craig Manuel hit a leadoff single to leftfield. Daniel Gonzalez-Luna pinch-ran for Manuel and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Abe Gonzales plated Gonzales-Luna with a pinch-hit single to leftfield.
The Longhorns reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Shepherd drew a four-pitch walk. Brandon Loy hit a wall-banger to the gap in left centerfield to plate Shepherd for the game-winner.
Taylor Wall (0-2) was saddled with the loss for Rice. He allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight over 7.1 innings.
Manuel paced Rice with two hits, the only player with a multiple-hit game. Shepherd scored both runs for the Longhorns.
Texas returns to action at Minute Maid Park with a 3:30 p.m. game against the Houston Cougars.
