HOUSTON -- Despite a four-hit, complete-game performance by Brandon Workman, the No. 3 Texas Longhorns lost a 1-0 decision to the Houston Cougars in collegiate baseball action at the Houston College Classic on Saturday afternoon.
On the first pitch he threw, Workman yielded a triple to Blake Kelso, who would score on the very next pitch when Workman uncorked a wild pitch.
Workman (1-1) retired the next 14 batters he faced and faced just 27 batters in his eight innings, three over the minimum. For the game, the right-hander allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out seven over 8.0 innings.
The Longhorns were unable score a run off the Cougars' three pitchers. Michael Goodnight (2-1) earned the win, scattering two hits and four walks while striking out nine over 7.0 innings. Ty Stuckey worked an inning, striking out two and allowing a walk to a batter who would be caught stealing in the inning. Matt Creel picked up his second save of the season, working one scoreless inning, allowing one hit and one walk, while striking out two.
Texas (7-3) left seven on base for the game, including two in the ninth inning. With Creel pitching, Cameron Rupp hit a leadoff single to centerfield. He was replaced at first base by pinch-runner Cohl Walla. Russell Moldenhauer followed by drawing a walk and had Tim Maitland enter the game to pinch-run for him. Kevin Keyes failed to get down a sacrifice bunt and eventually struck out swinging. Connor Rowe was a strikeout victim looking setting up the last out of the inning. Paul Montalbano came in for his first NCAA Division I plate appearance and drove a 2-1 pitch that was unable to make it over a leaping shortstop resulting in a game-ending lineout.
The Longhorns managed just three hits and six walks for the game. Houston had five baserunners with four hits and one walk.
Texas wraps up action at the Houston College Classic with an 11 a.m. game against Missouri on Sunday.
