Post-game Quotes
TCU Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle
Opening Statement:
I thought it was a great ball game. I thought [Matt] Purke pitched well, [Tyler] Lockwood was outstanding, and Cole Green threw great as well. We had some balls that don't normally get through on that turf get through, and we were able to take advantage of scoring opportunities. I told the team going into the weekend that when you get a guy on third base with less than two outs, against this team, you need to execute and we were able to do just that today.
On what the series will come down to: Like Coach [Auggie] Garrido said yesterday, if it stays true to what's on paper, it's either going to be who screws the game up, who can get that bunt down, the execution of a hit and run, or getting that guy to third base with two outs because both pitching staffs aren't going to give you much.
TCU LHP Matt Purke
On today's mindset:
It's a big situation. I was really focused on just going out there and making pitches because that's all you can do. You can't get caught up with everything outside of the field, all you can do is focus on each pitch and try to execute. That's what we've been taught to do all year and that's what we're going to keep doing.
On the importance of the first inning: It was huge. I'm a very emotional pitcher and I'm fueled by emotion. To be able to go out there and strike out the side just gets everybody fired up, and when we've got all of our guys fired up and playing together we're real hard to beat.
TCU 1B Matt Curry
On winning game one as opposed to losing it last year:
It's definitely a big win because you know that you don't have to play three games. We can take care of it all tomorrow and we're going to come out and give it our best shot.
On thinking about getting guys to third: Definitely. Once you get up there you know that you've just got to try to elevate a ball and hopefully you can get it deep enough to the outfield to drive in a run. Even if we don't get that fly ball, we just try to hit a hard ground ball and we usually get that run in either way.
Texas Head Coach Augie Garrido
Opening Statement:
The game was about pitching. That's what we were looking forward to like I said yesterday. It was about the level of pitching and that's what we saw today. Both teams played almost the same game, the separation was in one inning and in that one inning the luck factor became a part of it. We talked about that yesterday and you saw it when we were trying to walk a guy and he stumbled when he took his stride forward, his front cleat caught and he lost his balance and that's why that pitch got away. And it got them two runs. From their side of it, they were very opportunistic and that's what this game is all about when it is played at such a high level. They converted their bunts to get their runners in scoring position, they scored on productive outs, and that's just good college baseball. I thought our players came out and were aggressive in the early going, maybe a little too much so. We were swinging at pitches out of the zone but we made an adjustment and did a lot better job. We took a lot better at bats from the 5th inning on
On TCU LHP Matt Purke: I didn't have many thoughts on what he might be like from just looking at the statistics. I had never seen him pitch before. In all that he has accomplished in such an early stage in his career it has to be something very special and he certainly is.
On refocusing after today's loss: What I did was remind them of 2002. We lost the first game to Houston and came back to win the national championship. In 2005 we lost the first game at Ole Miss and came back and won the national championship, so just be aware that around the country you will see two or three teams that will lose the first game and come back and win the tournament. It's about the series. They are a very good baseball team. They are very well designed. And so are we so it should be very exciting tomorrow.

On facing TCU RHP Matt Purke:
His adrenaline was running at the beginning of the game and he was pumped up by the crowd. He's a competitor. Its stuff that we have seen on our own staff, we have guys on our staff that have the same kind of stuff. He battled today, he threw well. He hit his spots, and he fought off the crowd, and did the stuff that he needed to.
On his homerun: He was throwing all of his pitches in that at bat. Fastball, changeup, breaking ball. Coach Garrido told us to get pitches up in the zone because we were chasing a lot earlier. He threw me a breaking ball and it's very windy today and some pop ups will head out. I got a breaking ball up and I hit it and it got out.
Texas RHP Stayton Thomas
On the atmosphere in the locker room after the game:
We're all upbeat. We all know TCU is a great baseball team and we aren't taking anything away from them, but we also know that we are just as good as they are and we do have the ability to come back tomorrow and win two straight and go to Omaha. You really can't get down about the first loss because that could happen on any given day, and I think we will show up and be ready to play tomorrow. Hopefully our nerves will settle down a little bit now that we know the atmosphere is going to be like and we can just play Texas baseball.
