WINDEMERE, Fla. -- The top-ranked Texas Men's Golf team topped the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational leaderboard with an opening-round 10-under-par 278 Sunday afternoon. Freshman Jordan Spiethled UT with a 7-under 65 to hold a four-stroke lead in the individual field.
The Longhorns are seeking their third-straight victory of the fall season afterclaiming the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate and Jack Nicklaus Invitational by acombined 36 strokes. A win for two-time U.S. Junior Amateur Champion Spiethwould mark the first of his collegiate career.
Today's round was Spieth's seventh as a Longhorn and arguably his best performance to date. Playing for the first time in Texas' No. 1 position, Spieth found five birdie opportunities on the fifth, eighth, ninth, 17th and 18th holes to compliment his first eagle of the year on No. 13. After finding himself 10 yards short of the green on his second shot (hybrid), Spieth chipped in to a tricky front pin placement to join junior Cody Gribble(Jerry Pate, third round) as the only Longhorns to notch eagles this fall.
Spieith's raw score is his second 65 of the year after opening the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate with the same score in a round that included six birdies and a lone bogey.
Junior Julio Vegas and sophomore Toni Hakulaeach played their final six holes at 3-under to finish the day tied for fifth place at 2-under 70. Vegas notched three birdies and four bogeys on the front nine and was 1-over through 12 holes before carding birdied on Nos. 13, 16 and 18. Hakula rebounded from a double bogey on the fifth hole with back-to-back birdies on seven and eight, but was 1-overafter a bogey on 12. Hakula finished with a pair of birdies on the 13th and 14th holes before collecting a final subpar on No. 17.
Senior Dylan Frittelliis tied for 17th place at 1-over 73 and Gribble (75) is two strokes back and tied for 36th place.
Texas holds a nine-stroke advantage over second-place North Florida (287, -1) entering Monday's second round.
