VESTAVIAHILLS, Ala. - The No. 7 Texas Men's Golf team built a commanding 15-stroke lead during Monday's first two rounds of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate after turning in a trio of subpar performances by freshman Jordan Spieth (65-69=134, -6), senior Dylan Frittelli (66-69=135) and junior Julio Vegas (69-70=139). The Longhorns (271-278) are at 11-under-par 549 while sitting atop the 12-team leaderboard and Spieth holds a share of the 36-hole lead in his college debut.
Spieth's inaugural round was nearly perfect, as he birdied six holes on the 6,936-yard Old Overton Club. The two-time U.S. Junior Amateur Champion was 4-under on the front nine after opening his day with a birdie on the first hole and stringing together three more birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes. Another red number on No. 11 dropped Spieth to 5-under before he made his first bogey at 13. A final birdie attempt ensued at No. 16 and Spieth was on top of the individual board with an opening round 65. His second round included five birdies and four bogeys to result in the 1-under scorecard.
Frittelli also turned in a pair of 60s with a first-round 66 that was followed up with a 1-under 69 in the afternoon. Frittelli is one stroke behind co-leaders Spieth and Clemson's Corbin Mills (65-69) at 5-under 135 and tied for third place.
Vegas and junior Cody Gribble (71-70) are also in the top-10 mix after Monday's rounds. Vegas is tied for seventh place while Gribble is tied for ninth at 1-over 141. Sophomore Toni Hakula (72-73=145) rounds out the Longhorns in a tie for 21st place.
Texas is set to play alongside second-place Clemson (277-287=564) and third-place Alabama (281-284=565) in Tuesday's final round. The Longhorns will tee off beginning at 8:50 a.m. on the first tee.
