Frittelli records second-place finish in season-opening Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- Senior Dylan Frittelli paced the No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team with a second-place finish at the season-opening Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational Sunday afternoon. Frittelli finished the 54-hole affair at 1-under-par 209 (69-71-69), just three strokes behind Stanford medalist Patrick Rodgers (68-70-68=206). As a team, the Longhorns (289-290-294) finished fifth in the 15-team field at 33-over 873.
Frittelli made an early charge with three straight birdies on the second, third and fourth holes of the 7,142-yard Olympia Fields CC and dropped to 4-under with an additional subpar on seven. He played the first two holes of the back nine at even before encountering his first bogey of the day on No. 12. Three more bogeys on Nos. 14, 16 and 17 ensued, but Frittelli finished the day at 1-under with a fifth birdie on the 15th hole.
On the weekend, Frittelli paced the Longhorns with two subpar rounds and was one of just three players in the field to card two rounds under par.
Junior Julio Vegas (74-69-73) narrowly missed the Top 10 and finished in a four-way tie for 11th place at 6-over 216. Junior Cody Gribble (72-75-78), senior Alex Moon (74-75-76) and freshman Kramer Hickok (74-75-76) each finished tied for 46th place at 15-over 225.
Stanford (277-282-290) held on for a wire-to-wire team victory at 9-over 849, while Oklahoma State (282-288-295) and Auburn (285-293-287) tied for second at 25-over.
The Longhorns will return to action in two weeks at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate (Oct. 3-4) in Birmingham, Ala.
