WAIKOLOA, Hawaii -- Senior Dylan Frittelli, junior Cody Gribble and sophomore Toni Hakula paced the top-ranked Texas Men's Golf team to the top of the leaderboard after Wednesday's first round of action at the Amer Ari Invitational. Frittelli, Gribble and Hakula carded 5-under-par 67s in their spring debuts and are tied for fourth place on the individual leaderboard, just one shot off the lead. As a team, the Longhorns (270, -18) hold a five-stroke lead over second-place UCLA (275) and Washington (275).
Frittelli enjoyed a bogey free round at Waikoloa Kings' Course. He notched his first birdie of the day on the par-3 third and made the turn at 2-under after birdying the eighth. Frittelli closed his round with three more birdies in his final five holes, including back-to-back subpars on 14 and 15 and a final on 18.
Gribble started off on fire birdying three of his first four holes before giving one back with a bogey on the par-3 seventh. Gribble also finished strong by birdying three of his last five, but a bogey on the 17th resulted in the 5-under finish.
Unlike Gribble, Hakula got off to a rough start after bogeying his first hole, but rebounded by birdying six of his next 14 holes. A bogey on the first, his second to last hole, set him back, but Gribble responded immediately with a birdie on the second, his final hole, to finish tied for fourth at 5-under with his two elder teammates.
Freshman Jordan Spieth also enjoyed a good day with a 3-under 69 to put him tied for 15th place and just three shots off the lead. Spieth was even-par going into the 15th, but then birdied three of his last four to move up the leaderboard and give himself momentum going into Thursday's second round.
Junior Julio Vegas played a solid round and finished even-par, and was key in helping Texas build its five stroke lead over UCLA.
Second round play kicks off for all players tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. Central.
