Hakula cards second-straight 1-under 71 at Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- Sophomore Toni Hakula paced the No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team with a second round score of 1-under-par 71 at the Puerto Rico Classic on Tuesday afternoon. With back-to-back subpar rounds of 71, Hakula is tied for eighth place alongside senior Dylan Frittelli (70-72) at 2-under 142. The Longhorns (288-292=580, +4) are in ninth place thru 36 holes.
Texas struggled on the front nine of Rio Mar Country Club's River Course in the second round and finished the stretch at 5-over compared to 3-under on the back side. Playing in a shotgun format, the Longhorns began day two on holes five, six and seven.
Hakula countered four bogeys with five birdies on Rio Mar Country Club's River Course to result in the team-low 1-under scorecard. Frittelli balanced four subpars - including four in a five-hole stretch on the back nine - with as many bogeys to finish at even.
Junior Julio Vegas sank eight birdies in his second round, but ended the day at even-par 72 after carding three double-bogeys and one bogey. He is tied for 29th place at 2-over 146 (74-72).
Junior Cody Gribble (73-77) and freshman Kramer Hickok (75-77) round out the Texas squad at 6-over 150 and 8-over 152, respectively, and tied for 45th and 56th places.
Alabama remains in the lead through two rounds at 21-under 555 (276-279). Host Purdue is in second place and 13 strokes back at 8-under 568 (289-279) while Clemson is in third place at 569 (283-286).
Final round action kicks off for all players tomorrow at 5:30 a.m. Central in a shotgun start.
