WAIKOLOA, Hawaii -- The No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team rolled to its fourth-consecutive win Friday afternoon at the Amer Ari Invitational in wire-to-wire fashion after carding a final-round 11-under-par 277 to best the 20-team field at Waikoloa Kings' Course. UT topped runner-up Southern California (276-285-278=839) by five strokes and placed three Longhorns in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard.
For the third time in as many days, freshman Jordan Spieth birdied the final two holes during his bogey-free round of 67 to post 11-under 205 (69-69-67) and force a playoff with USC sophomore Jeffrey Kang, but it wasn't enough to win his second straight event after closing the fall season with his first collegiate title at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational. Kang made par on the par-4 16th hole in a one-hole playoff to top Spieth's bogey for the individual crown.
Senior Dylan Frittelli (67-71-72) collected his fifth top 10 of the season in as many events at 6-under 210 to tie for ninth place with sophomore Toni Hakula (67-69-74).
Junior Julio Vegas matched Spieth's 67 with one of his own to jump from a tie for 82nd place after 36 holes to a tie for 43rd. Vegas' final round included an eagle on the par-5, 513-yard fourth hole - his first of the season - six birdies and three bogeys. Junior Cody Gribble (67-79-71) also tied for 43rd place after shaving eight strokes off of his second-round 79 in Friday's finale.
Texas closed the fall season with wins in its last three starts at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate (Oct. 3-4), Jack Nicklaus Invitational (Oct. 10-11) and Isleworth (Oct. 23-25) last fall. The Longhorns defeated their opponents by an average margin of 20.67 strokes during the same stretch.
UT returns to action in just over two weeks at the Puerto Rico Invite (Feb. 19-21) in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico.
