LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 4-over-par 292 in Friday's opening round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters to tie for fifth place in the 15-team field. Sophomore Toni Hakula paced the Longhorns with a 2-under 70 at the 7,510-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club and is tied for sixth place, while senior Dylan Frittelli finished one stroke back at 71 and is in a nine-way tie for 10th place.
Beginning his round on the first tee, Hakula drained three-straight birdies on the second, third and fourth holes. He made pars on his next five holes to turn at 3-under, but back-to-back bogeys on 10 and 11 cost him two strokes. Hakula rebounded with a pair of subpars on the next two holes before a third and final bogey on the 14th hole set him back to 2-under for the day. Hakula finished his round with four more pars.
Frittelli's scorecard consisted of three birdies and two bogeys, including an unfortunate blemish on the par-5 18th hole that resulted in his 1-under performance.
Hakula and Frittelli were two of only 18 players in the field of 78 to finish Friday's first round under par.
Freshmen Kramer Hickok and Jordan Spieth are tied for 40th and 51st places, respectively, at 3-over 75 and 5-over 76. Senior Alex Moon finished the day at 8-over 80 and is tied for 65th.
California commands the team leaderboard at 2-under 286. Host UNLV is one stroke back and in second place while Texas A&M rounds out the top-three teams at even-par 288.
The Longhorns are set to begin Saturday's second round at 10:45 a.m. Central on the first tee alongside Stanford and UCLA in nine-minute increments.
