BRYAN, Texas -- Reigning Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year Toni Hakula paced the Texas Men's Golf team at The Aggie Invitational on Saturday with a 36-hole total of 2-over-par 146 (74-72). Hakula is in fifth place on the individual leaderboard and just three strokes off the leader.
As a team, the Longhorns are fourth on the team leaderboard while playing without top-ranked collegiate individual Jordan Spieth due to his sponsor exemption in this week's PGA TOUR Valero Texas Open.
With The Aggie Invitational featuring a six-player format with each team counting five individual scores each round, Texas shot a 25-over 385 in round one before following with an 18-over 378 in the second round. Oregon (376-376=752, +32) holds the 36-hole team lead while Texas A&M (378-381=759, +39) and Oklahoma (384-376=760, +4) are in second and third places, respectively.
After an opening-round 2-over 74, Hakula rebounded in the second round with a team-best even-par 72. Just six players including Hakula completed their afternoon round at par or better as constant wind forced scores at Traditions Golf Club to climb.
Junior Julio Vegas led Texas in the morning round with a 1-over 73. Vegas (73-77) is tied for 10th place at 6-over 150.
Senior Alex Moon (79-77) and freshman Kramer Hickok (83-73) are both at 12-over 156 and tied for 29th place. Junior Cody Gribble (80-79=159) and senior Dylan Frittelli (79-81=160) round out the UT contingent in ties for 45th and 47th places.
Senior Adam Wennerstrom (78-77=155) is tied for 26th place while competing as an individual.
Play was suspended due to darkness at 8 p.m. with seven players remaining on the course. Those players will return at 7:30 a.m. to finish their second rounds and the third round is set to begin at 8 a.m. in threesomes off of the first and 10th holes.
