No. 1 Men's Golf fires field-best 5-under 283 to improve to second place at Big 12 Championship

TRINITY, Texas -- The No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team fired a field-best 5-under-par 283 in Saturday's third round of the Big 12 Championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club to improve to second place with 18 holes remaining in its quest for the conference crown. The Longhorns climbed from fourth place with the aid of senior Dylan Frittelli's 5-under 67 and junior Julio Vegas' 3-under 69. UT (302-292-283=877, +13) trails 54-hole leader Texas A&M (296-286-286=868) by nine strokes entering Sunday's finale of the 72-hole championship.
The second-ranked collegiate individual and a Ben Hogan Award semifinalist, Frittelli carded Saturday's low individual round to remain in second place at 4-under 212 (69-76-67). He opened with a pair of birdies on the first and second holes before adding two more on four and six. At the turn, Frittelli encountered his first bogey of the round on 10 before going birdie-bogey on 11 and 12. He capped his round with two more subpars on 14 and 18 to remain in contention for individual honors as he trails Oklahoma's Abraham Ancer (72-69-69=21) by just two strokes.
Vegas (78-71-69) was on pace to match Frittelli's low round when he sank his sixth birdie of the day on 17 and came to the 18th tee at 5-under. His approach to the water-protected green on the par-4 fell short, and Vegas closed with a double bogey to finish at 3-under. He is tied for ninth place along with Texas freshman Jordan Spieth (74-69-75) at 2-over 218.
Senior Alex Moon finished at even-par 72 with three birdies, one bogey and a double. His three-round total of 8-over 224 (81-76-72) puts him in 32nd place.
Sophomore Toni Hakula (81-76-77=234) rounds out the Texas contingent in a tie for 40th place.
The Longhorns are set to begin Sunday's fourth round beginning at 9:03 a.m. on the first tee alongside the Aggies.

On today's round and Sunday's finale: It was a good round. The guys played some good golf today. Dylan's 67, Julio's 69 and Alex's 72 were fantastic. We were hoping to cut the lead to single digits to give ourselves a chance tomorrow, and we did that. We have a lot of work to still do tomorrow. We'll come out and get after it. We have momentum from today and we need to use it to try and really get after it tomorrow.
