No. 9 Auburn defeats No. 4 Men's Swimming and Diving, 166-132

AUBURN, Ala. - Texas senior All-American Michael McBroom notched a pair of wins, but No. 9 Auburn (4-0) defeated No. 4 Texas (1-2) by a 166-132 count Thursday at Auburn's James E. Martin Aquatics Center.
The men's one-meter diving event preceded the swimming events, and junior Will McCraney paced the Texas contingent by taking third in 322.65. Auburn opened the swimming events with a win in the 200-yard medley relay before Texas claimed the top four spots in the 1000 freestyle.
Fresh off of his appearance for the United States at the FINA Short Course World Championships, McBroom claimed the event in 9 minutes, 3.68 seconds. Freshman Sam Lewis took second in 9:11.41, while sophomore Nicolas Munoz took third in 9:16.47. Sophomore Jake Ritter placed fourth in 9:22.25.
UT sophomore Clay Youngquist rallied in the final 50 yards to take the 200 freestyle in a solid mid-season time of 1:36.17. Senior Dax Hill, the event's reigning NCAA champion, placed third in 1:37.51. Senior Cole Cragin led the Horns in the 100 backstroke by taking second in 48.19. Sophomore Kip Darmody took third in 49.09.
Senior Austin Surhoff paced the Horns in the 100 breaststroke with his second-place time of 56.55. Freshman John Martens followed with an easy victory in the 200 butterfly in 1:49.48. Sophomore Tripp Cooper added a third-place time of 1:52.19. Junior Charlie Moore posted a third-place time of 20.74 in the 50 freestyle. Youngquist led UT with a third-place mark of 44.51 in the 100 freestyle, while Darmody led the Horns by taking second in the 200 backstroke in 1:48.21.
McBroom nailed down his second win of the day in the 500 freestyle and cruised to victory by over three seconds in 4:24.51. Martens placed third in 4:29.63. Cooper returned to post his first win of the day in the 100 butterfly, where he prevailed in 48.77. McCraney paced the Texas divers again in the three-meter event by placing third with 352.95 points. Sophomore Will Chandler placed fourth with 337.13 points.
Surhoff led Texas in the 200 IM with a second-place mark of 1:50.71. Texas finished off the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay, as Madison Wenzler, Youngquist, Moore and Hill finished in 1:21.67.
Texas completes its road swing on Saturday when it takes on Georgia at UGA's Gabrielsen Natatorium.
