HUMBLE, Texas -- The No. 2 Texas Men's Golf (285-274-283=842, -22) team coasted to its second win of the season in a 21-stroke victory in the Bayou City Collegiate Championship Sunday afternoon at Redstone Golf Club. Freshman Brandon Stone (72-68-67=207) picked up his second medalist award, and senior Julio Vegas (69-69-72=210) and junior Toni Hakula (72-67-72=211) finished second and tied for third, respectively. Junior walk-on Brax McCarthy (67-69-77=213), the 36-hole leader, tied for sixth place overall while competing as an individual for the Longhorns.
Texas' previous win this season was at the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate, where Stone earned medalist honors in his collegiate debut.
Stone fired a field-best 5-under 67 to finish three strokes ahead of Vegas. After a single bogey on No. 4 - Stone's third hold of the day after beginning the shotgun start on No. 2 - he rattled off three straight birdies on Nos. 8, 9 and 10, and added three more on Nos. 12, 16 and 18. Stone collected 17 subpars throughout the 54-hole event, including six in each of his final two rounds.
Vegas played steady golf on the final day to maintain his second-place position after 36 holes. He countered a pair of bogeys on Nos. 6 and 17 with as many birdies on Nos. 4 and 15. Hakula also shot even par on the final day with three-consecutive birdies on Nos. 12-14 and three bogeys on Nos. 5, 17 and 18.
McCarthy's final round scorecard included five bogeys (Nos. 17, 5, 11, 15 and 16) after beginning the day atop the standings with a two-stroke lead.
Senior Cody Gribble (73-70-72=215) and sophomore Kramer Hickok (72-71-76=219) rounded out Texas' squad in ties for 11th and 25th places.
