No. 5 Men’s Golf tied for fifth after opening day at Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational

FORT WORTH, Texas — The No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team carded a two-round total of 8-over 568 (285-283) on Monday to rest in a tie for fifth place after the opening day of the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational presented by Charles Schwab at historic Colonial Country Club. Senior Tommy Morrison fired a 36-hole score of even-par 140 (72-68) and is tied for eighth in the individual standings entering Tuesday's final round.
In Monday's morning round, Texas counted scores from Maas (even-par 70), junior Jack Gilbert (even-par 70), Morrison (2-over 72) and sophomore Daniel Bennett (3-over 73) to post a team round of 5-over 285. During Monday afternoon's second round, the Longhorns counted scores from Morrison (2-under 68), graduate Matt Comegys (even-par 70), Maas (1-over 71) and Gilbert (4-over 74) to card a team round of 3-over 283.
No. 8 Virginia holds a three-stroke lead in the team standings at 1-under 559 (273-286). No. 19 Texas Tech is second at 2-over 562 (274-288), and No. 14 North Carolina is third at 3-over 563 (279-284). No. 18 Georgia Tech is fourth at 7-over 567 (281-286), while the Longhorns (285-283) and No. 6 Vanderbilt (285-283) are tied for fifth at 8-over 568, nine strokes off the lead. The prestigious 15-team field features 13 squads in the top 25 of the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Sept. 19).
Ben James of Virginia (67-69) and Texas Tech's Connor Graham (67-69) share the individual lead after the opening 36 holes with a two-round total of 4-under 136. Ryder Cowan of Oklahoma is third at 3-under 137 (70-67). Morrison is part of a five-way tie for eighth place at even-par 140, just four strokes off the lead.
The Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational concludes with a final round on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Texas will be paired with Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt on Tuesday.

- Senior Tommy Morrison carded a two-round score of even-par 140 (72-68) on Monday and is tied for eighth place in the individual standings. Starting on hole 10 in his afternoon round, he was 1-over through his first nine holes before making four birdies (holes 1, 3, 7 and 8) against just one bogey (hole 4) to close out his 2-under 68.
- Senior Christiaan Maas fired a 36-hole total of 1-over 141 (70-71) and is tied for 13th place. Starting on hole 10, Maas registered three birdies (holes 12, 18 and 8) against three bogeys in his morning round to post an even-par 70.
- Junior Jack Gilbert recorded a two-round score of 4-over 144 (70-74) and is tied for 32nd. Starting on hole 11 in his morning round, he tallied a pair of birdies (holes 16 and 2) against two bogeys to finish at even-par 70.
- Graduate Matt Comegys registered a 36-hole total of 4-over 144 (74-70) and is tied for 32nd. Starting on hole 8 in his afternoon round, Comegys was 2-over through his opening six holes but rallied to post three birdies (holes 14, 16 and 1) against just one bogey (hole 2) to close out his even-par 70.
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett fired a two-round score of 9-over 149 (73-76) and is tied for 63rd.
