WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - The No. 2 Texas Men's Golf team (279-283-288=850, +14) finished tied for fourth place in its spring debut at the Amer Ari Invitational at Kings' Course in Waikoloa, Hawaii. Senior Cody Gribble and freshman Brandon Stone recorded the Longhorns' top individual finishes, as the duo shared fourth place at 8-under 208.
Gribble (69-68-71) began Friday's final round as the 36-hole co-leader, but his 1-under 71 wasn't enough to overcome a third-round 67 by Auburn's Dominic Bozzelli (70-78-67=205, -11) for the medalist title. Gribble's scorecard included three birdies on the 13th, 14th and 18th holes to offset a pair of bogeys at Nos. 3 and 12. Over 54 holes, Gribble sank 13 total birdies and went the entire event with no worse than a bogey (five) on any hole. He was also the only Texas player to birdie No. 18 all three days.
Stone (69-69-70) capitalized on five birdie opportunities (Nos. 2, 4, 9, 10, 18) en route to his team-best, final-round score of 2-under 70. Bogeys on Nos. 3, 6 and 11 put him back three strokes. Stone's tournament scorecard included two eagles, 10 birdies and six bogeys.
Junior Toni Hakula (70-73-72) finished at 1-under 215 to tie for 26th place. Junior Brax McCarthy (71-76-75=222) and redshirt freshman Will Griffin (77-73-77=227) finished tied for 70th and 96th places, respectively.
Sophomore Kramer Hickok (73-69-72=214) and senior Julio Vegas (72-67-78=217) tied for 20th and 42nd places while competing as individuals.
UCLA (277-280-285) and Washington (280-275-287) shared the team title at 22-under 842. TCU (277-291-281=849, -15) rounded out the top three teams, while Southern California (291-273-286) matched Texas' 14-under 850 to tie for fourth place.
