HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Ben Hogan Award semifinalist Brandon Stone led the top-seeded Texas Men's Golf team atop both the team and individual leaderboards after 36 holes Monday in the Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club. The Longhorns (290-281=571, +11) hold a seven-stroke lead over the Oklahoma State Cowboys (285-292=577), and Stone is the leader in the clubhouse by two shots at 3-under 137 (70-67).
Six teams have yet to complete their second rounds as play was suspended due to darkness. Earlier in the day, the first round was suspended due to inclement weather at 11:05 a.m., just as Texas players were scattered over holes 10-12. Play resumed an hour later.
Finding themselves in fourth place after an opening round 10-over, the Longhorns rallied with a 1-over 281 that was highlighted by Stone's 67. After 12 straight pars to begin his afternoon, Stone was tripped just once by a bogey at the par-4 No. 13. With strong wind gusts blowing in from the west as Texas played its remaining five holes, Stone sank back-to-back birdie putts on 14 and 15 and added his second eagle of the day on No. 17 to finish his last five holes at 5-under.
Stone also led the Horns in first-round action with an even 70 that included his first eagle of the day on No. 7, two birdies and four bogeys.
Senior Cody Gribble (72-71) finished the day at +3 and in sixth place. His scorecards included six birdies, seven bogeys and one double.
Junior Toni Hakula (74-72) and sophomore Kramer Hickok (74-72) are currently tied for 14th place with identical totals of 146, and senior Julio Vegas (77-71) rounds out the Texas contingent in a tie for 23rd.
Vegas notched Texas' biggest turnaround with a 71 in the afternoon after signing for a 77 to begin the 72-hole stroke play championship.
Following the suspension of play on Monday evening, the second round of the Big 12 Championships will continue on Tuesday with an 11 a.m. start for those needing to complete play. Tee boxes and pin placements at holes 6, 7, 8 and 9 and 17 and 18 will remain the same as Monday for the completion of Round 2.
Once the second round is completed, Round 3 will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Post-round Quotes
Texas Head Coach John Fields
On Texas' day one performance: Our guys did a good job. Brandon Stone's 67 this afternoon was outstanding. Cody Gribble 71, Julio Vegas 71 in the afternoon coming back from a 77 in the morning was outstanding. I'm real pleased.
On today's conditions: Prairie Dunes was Prairie Dunes. It seemed like all four season were in Hutchinson, Kan., today. We had rain, we had wind, we had cold. We had a beautiful moment there for a couple of hours, it was just really beautiful, probably in the mid 60s with no wind at all. We had everything you could have, sun and clouds and hail.
Freshman Brandon Stone
On his second round performance: I turned in a 67 this afternoon and I'm really proud of myself. I made a lot of good shots, a lot of good putts, and I'm going to have to take it into tomorrow.
On his thoughts after his first day in a Big 12 Championship: Things are going good. The team did well this afternoon, we finished 1-over for a great team score. The wind came in over the last five holes and made it really, really challenging.
