The Longhorns get goals from Brooke Gilbert, Chantale Campbell and Kelsey Shimmick and Abby Smith posts 11th career shutout on Sunday in Austin.
AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomores Chantale Campbell and Kelsey Shimmick scored for the second straight game and sophomore keeper Abby Smith recorded her second consecutive shutout as Texas Soccer topped UTSA, 3-0, on Sunday evening at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Longhorns have won five of their last six matches and improve to 6-3-1 on the season on the final weekend of non-conference play.
Brooke Gilbert got UT on the board in the 32nd minute when Sharis Lachappelle took one of Texas' 14 corner kicks on the game. Lachappelle sent a ball into the box that UTSA goalkeeper Bubba Makela was able to get her hands on, but Gilbert tapped it in mid-air with her right foot for the score. It was Gilbert's fourth goal of the season and her third game-winner, which ties her for first in the category among Big 12 Conference players.
Campbell added an insurance score for the Longhorns in the 54th minute after finding the back of the net for the first time in her career two days ago against the Texas State Bobcats. Shimmick sent a shot from just outside the box that Makela was unable to corral and Campbell put it in on the rebound from five yards out on the left side.
Shimmick then tacked on one more for Texas in the 60th minute for her fourth goal of 2013 off a pass from Whitney Jaynes, who was credited with her second assist of the season. Shimmick's arcing shot from just outside the 18-yard box on the left side found the upper-right corner of the net, a nearly identical goal to the one she scored on Friday against the Bobcats.
The Longhorns commanded play on the offensive end, taking a season-high 33 shots to UTSA's nine and carrying a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. Texas took 14 corner kicks, 10 of which came in the second half, to the Roadrunners' two.
It was a quiet night in goal for UT keeper Abby Smith, who had four saves en route to her 11th career shutout and fourth of the 2013 season.
UT will kick off its Big 12 campaign at home next weekend against TCU on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. The Longhorns will then face the Iowa State Cyclones on Sunday at 1 p.m. Longhorn Network will televise both matches live.
