Whitney Jaynes and Sydney Shutter lift the Longhorns to their sixth victory in seven matches on Friday evening in Austin.
AUSTIN, Texas – Junior Whitney Jaynes scored her first career goal and sophomore Sydney Shutter found the back of the net for the first time this season as the Texas Soccer team kicked off its 2013 Big 12 campaign with a 2-0 win over TCU on Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field.
Following a weather delay that pushed back the start of the match by 45 minutes, Texas continued to show the offensive versatility it displayed throughout the pre-conference season, backed by strong play from its back line that helped sophomore keeper Abby Smith to her third consecutive shutout.
With the victory, the Longhorns improve to 7-3-1 on the season and have now won six of their last seven matches. TCU falls to 4-5-2.
Jaynes got Texas on the board early in the fourth minute. The play started with Jaynes throwing the ball in to Chantale Campbell in the near corner on the left side. After receiving a pass back from Campbell, Jaynes launched a powerful kick from 40 yards out into the box that cleared the outstretched hand of TCU goalkeeper Vittoria Arnold and curled inside the far post.
Shutter tacked on an insurance goal for the Longhorns in the 62nd minute after earning her second straight start. Sophomore Kelsey Shimmick got past her defender on the left side and sent an arcing cross in the direction of the goal. Shutter had position on her defender inside the six-yard box and got her head on the ball, sending it past a diving Arnold into the back of the net.
Texas finished the match with 11 shots, four of them on goal. TCU tallied seven shots and managed just two shots on goal in the game, both of which came before halftime.
Bobbi Clemmon led TCU with two shots, both of them on goal, playing all 90 minutes. Arnold finished the match with a pair of saves.
The Longhorns continue conference play when they take on the Iowa State Cyclones in Austin on Sunday. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Longhorn Network.
