LONGHORNS OPEN BIG 12 PLAY THIS WEEKEND …
The Texas Soccer team kicks off conference play this weekend against TCU and Iowa State. The Longhorns are 3-2-1 all-time in Big 12 Conference home openers and 8-8-1 in Big 12 league openers overall. UT topped Iowa State, 4-0, in Ames in 2012 to kick off the Big 12 season in Angela Kelly's first year as head coach.
TEXAS AGAINST THE HORNED FROGS AND THE CYCLONES ...
UT is 6-2-1 in program history when facing off against TCU, including winning three of four in Austin. Texas went 0-1-1 against TCU last season in the first year of the newly-realigned Big 12 Conference. The Longhorns are 17-2-1 all-time against Iowa State and have won seven of eight when playing in Austin.
GILBERT A DEFENSIVE AND OFFENSIVE ANCHOR ...
Junior center-back Brooke Gilbert co-leads Texas in scoring through the first 10 games of the season with four goals, most recently finding the back of the net in the 32nd minute of UT's 3-0 victory over UTSA. Three of Gilbert's goals have been game-winners for Texas, a mark that co-leads the Big 12 Conference in 2013.
CAMPBELL HAS BREAKOUT WEEKEND ...
Sophomore midfielder/forward Chantale Campbell scored a team-high six points over the Longhorns' pair of home games last weekend against Texas State and UTSA. Campbell scored her first two career goals at Texas, the first of which came in the 81st minute of Friday's match and the second of which occurred in the 54th minute on Sunday. In addition, Campbell recorded assists on both of the Longhorns' other two goals against Texas State to triple her career assist total.
BY THE NUMBERS ...
In non-conference play thus far in 2013, the Longhorns hold solid advantages in several offensive statistical categories. Texas has created 82 corner kick opportunities, the second most in the nation behind North Carolina, to its opponents' collective 45. The Longhorns have out-shot their opponents 169-79, an average of nine more per game, and hold a 78-39 advantage in shots on goal (3.9 more per game).
LAST TIME OUT …
Campbell and Shimmick scored for the second straight game and sophomore keeper Abby Smith recorded her second consecutive shutout as Texas topped UTSA, 3-0, last Sunday evening at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Texas also got a goal from Gilbert to open the game and Smith had four saves in goal. With the victory, the Longhorns have now won five of their last six matches and improve to 6-3-1 on the season on the final weekend of pre-conference play.
UP NEXT …
Following Sunday's match, Texas will travel to West Virginia on Friday, Oct. 4 and Kansas on Sunday, Oct. 6 for a pair of Big 12 Conference contests. The Longhorns are 1-1-0 in program history against the Mountaineers and carry a 13-3-2 record all-time against the Jayhawks.
