Pitchers in control as Orange wins second straight game
AUSTIN, Texas -- For the second time in as many games the Orange team defeated the White team 1-0 on Wednesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field to take a two games to none lead in the Orange-White Fall World Series.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kacy Clemens was impressive on the mound for the Orange squad, striking out four and allowing just one hit in three innings to pick up the victory.
Clemens was followed by sophomore left-hander Jon Malmin and junior left-hander Ty Culbreth, who each tossed two scoreless innings en route to the shutout. Malmin allowed one hit and one walk in his two innings of work, while Culbreth did not allow a hit or walk to earn the save.
The Orange squad once again scored the lone run of the game in the first inning. Sophomore outfielder Zane Gurwitz led off the top of the first with a full count single to right field, and freshman Bret Boswell quickly followed with a single of his own, setting the Orange team up with first and second and nobody out. After a double steal by Gurwitz and Boswell and an infield popout, freshman catcher Michael Cantu lofted a fly ball to center field that was deep enough to score Gurwitz for what proved to be the winning run.
Boswell had the only two-hit game from either team, going 2-for-4 with a stolen base. He had two hits on Monday night as well, and is 4-for-7 for the series thus far. Gurwitz is 3-for-8 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base in the two games.
For the white squad, freshman infielder Jake McKenzie has been the leader at the plate, with two hits in the series, including a double on Wednesday.
The White pitching staff, consisting of sophomore left-hander Josh Sawyer and freshman right-handers Chance Callihan and Parker Joe Robinson was solid, surrendering just one run on five hits and two walks in seven frames. Sawyer gave up the early run but he did not allow a base runner in his three innings of work after the first two batters of the game reached.
The two teams will conclude the three-game Fall World Series on Monday, Oct. 20, in a nine inning affair beginning at 4 p.m.
