Schiraldi goes eight shutout innings; four Longhorns record multiple hits.
AUSTIN, Texas -- Lukas Schiraldi tossed eight shutout innings, four Longhorns had multiple-hit games in a balanced offensive effort, and the No. 15/19 Texas baseball team defeated Dallas Baptist 5-0 Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The win was the Longhorns' 10th in their last 11 non-conference games and their fourth shutout of the year. Texas improved to 16-6 on the year while snapping a six-game winning streak for Dallas Baptist (15-5), which had averaged 7.1 runs per game coming in.
Schiraldi (3-1) surrendered just two hits while striking out three, walking three and setting a season-high by going eight innings, a frame longer than his Texas debut at California on Feb. 15. The junior allowed just one hit to leave the infield -- a single through the left side in the second inning -- and got the help of a Texas defense which turned three double plays on the evening.
At the plate, Mark Payton, C.J Hinojosa, Tres Barrera and Zane Gurwitz all had two-hit nights, while Brooks Marlow and Collin Shaw added a hit each. Marlow and Payton combined to reach base eight times, with Marlow drawing three walks and Payton earning two.
Texas, which is now 7-0 when scoring in the first inning, got a key run to open the game when Payton tripled down the right field line to score Marlow, who had worked a leadoff walk.
The Longhorns expanded the lead to 3-0 in the third on a two-out rally. With Ben Johnson on third and Payton on first, Hinojosa singled through the right side to bring in the first run, and Shaw followed with a double down the right field line to bring in the second.
Barrera led off the sixth with a double, moved to third on a Kacy Clemens groundout and scored on a bunt single by Gurwitz. After Marlow walked to put runners on first and second, Payton singled to center field to make it 5-0.
Schiraldi worked out of trouble in the second, using an inning-ending 3-6-1 double play to get out of a jam after issuing a walk and allowing a single.
The Texas defense stepped up again in the sixth, when Hinojosa and Marlow turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning; and again in the eighth, when with a man on first, Clemens caught a hard liner and stepped on the bag for a double play.
Parker French, who was scheduled to throw his bullpen on Tuesday in preparation to start Friday, came in the ninth to close it out for the Longhorns.
Texas plays host to Columbia this weekend at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, with games scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.
