Texas moves on to play Oklahoma State Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
No. 5 Texas 8, No. 4 Texas Tech 3
No. 5 Texas
Texas Head Coach Augie Garrido
Opening Statement: "I thought the game got off to a shaky start from our side with Lukas (Schiraldi) having a little trouble finding the strike zone. I think the five runs helped him settle down and by the fourth inning, after he gave up the run in the third he pitched very well. He had two very quality innings. He got us into the sixth and we played well defensively. I also thought we hit the ball well. It's the fourth game in a row that we have scored a high number of runs. The thing I like about it is that we are scoring runs with quality outs. The offensive players are being very unselfish, getting the run in anyway they can rather than just trying to get a hit."
On getting out of bases loaded jams: "We played for a month like that without it ever happening. The only time it happened was to us. We hit balls hard during those seven losses in that three-week period of time that were right at everybody. This is why I call this game ugly and cruel, because when it's going like that there isn't anything you can do about it."
On the team's current pitching situation: "The biggest concern we have about the bullpen is not to overuse it. We are a day short by playing last Sunday. The other team that played on Sunday isn't here…."
"When we get ready to go, wherever we are going [in the NCAA Tournament], we have to be fully loaded with our pitching. [Chad] Hollingsworth won't pitch again in this tournament. We have a quality bullpen of pitchers and they are going to have to do it. We won't overuse anybody to push through and win this tournament."
CF Mark Payton
On the five-run second inning and the team's mental toughness: "We have always believed no matter what the situation is, whether there is nobody out or two outs, we can always push across a run or two. We just have to keep battling and hand the bat to the guy behind you. That's been the thought for us as a position player from day one, and the attitude of this team is really what pushes that through."
No. 4 Texas Tech
Coach Tim Tadlock
Opening statement on loss: "We will tip our hat to Texas. I thought they played a great game and strung some hits together with two outs. That first time through the lineup I think that they strung six hits together, five or six guys got on in a row, and they were able to put a big number on us."
On team's comfort level on the road: "I think we were pretty comfortable tonight. I think Texas just played an awful good baseball game, Lukas Schiraldi and Chad Hollingsworth pitched well, and we really did not play all that good of a baseball game. As far as comfort goes, we were comfortable. They just out pitched and out played us. "
Second Base Braynt Burleson
On being down 5-0 early in game: "No I don't think so. It was only the second inning so we still had plenty of game left. We knew if we had scored a few runs here and there, we would be right back in it."
Outfielder Tyler Neslony
On missed opportunities: "Yeah, we missed some opportunities and if you want to win a game you have to do the little things and execute. We have to chip away and get one or two with the bases loaded opportunities. We just have to play our own baseball and we will be alright."
