Chad Hollingsworth and Mark Payton share Most Outstanding Player honors
HOUSTON - Fresh off of the 35th regional title in school history, six Longhorns were named to the Houston All-Regional team. Freshman catcher Tres Barrera, junior second baseman Brooks Marlow, senior outfielder Mark Payton, junior outfielder Collin Shaw, senior designated hitter Madison Carter and sophomore Chad Hollingsworth were all named to the squad.
Payton and Hollingsworth were named Co-Most Outstanding Player for their efforts. Payton went 4-for-13 (.308) with two doubles, four runs scored, a run driven in, five walks and four stolen bases over the four game span. Hollingsworth delivered a complete game two-hitter in the regional title game, in what was his first start of the season. He threw 128 pitches in the victory, allowing just one unearned run and two infield singles the entire game.
Barrera was 5-for-15 (.333) for the tournament, with two doubles, two RBI, two runs scored and three walks, all while catching every one of the 37 innings the Longhorns played. Marlow went 6-for-17 (.353) with a double, a home run, two runs scored, two RBI, a walk and a hit by pitch for the weekend.
Shaw had a 4-for-11 (.364) tournament with two RBI, a walk and a hit by pitch, a stolen base and two key putouts from right field. Carter was 5-for-15 (.333), with three runs scored, two RBI and a walk in the four games.
The Longhorns had twice as many players on the All-Regional Team as any other squad. Texas A&M had the second most with three: shortstop Blake Allemand, outfielder Krey Bratsen and pitcher Tyler Stubblefield. Rice added first baseman Skyler Ewing and third baseman Shane Hoelscher, while George Mason did not have anyone make the team.
