Base Knocks:
- Junior outfielder Lindsey Stephens, already one of 50 inclusions on the prestigious 2015 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List, picked up both Big 12 Conference Co-Player of the Week and NFCA National Player of the Week accolades after hitting .471 with five extra-base hits, including three HR's (two grand slams) and 11 RBIs at last weekend's Kajikawa Classic. In the process, Stephens became the first Texas Softball player to earn NFCA national honors since Blaire Luna back on March 22, 2011.
- Freshmen pitchers earned all three of Texas' victories at last weekend's Kajikawa Classic as Erica Wright went 2-1 from the circle and Kristen Clark was 1-0. Wright picked up triumphs over UCSB (15-0, 5 inn.) and No. 16 Arizona State (W, 9-4), while Clark earned the triumph over Northwestern with one solid inning of relief work.
- Junior catcher Erin Shireman provided the heroics against Northwestern on Feb. 7, battling Wildcat hurler Amy Letourneau over nine pitches before driving a 3-2, two-out, bottom of the seventh offering over the left field wall for a walk-off, 5-4 victory.
- Texas is making the "Big Inning" a part of its repetoire right from the start of the 2015 campaign. So far over its first five games, the Longhorns have plated at least three runs in an inning FOUR TIMES. In fact, UT has posted at least one three-run frame in FOUR OF ITS FIVE TOTAL GAMES. To this point, the largest single inning Texas has registered was a 13-run outburst in the fifth of the 15-0 (5 inn.) rout of UCSB (Feb. 6).
- When given the chance, Tiarra Davis proved to be the best possible lead-off batter Texas could have at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The sophomore stepped to the dish as the lead-off to an inning four times and reached base successfully on all four of those occasions. She was hit by a pitch against No. 2 Oregon (2nd), walked and scored twice (3rd & 7th) including the game-tying run against Northwestern and drew a free pass in the 2nd against Stanford.
- Texas is facing 11 teams currently ranked or "receiving votes" in the ESPN.com/USA Softball preseason Top 25 during the 2015 campaign, including No. 2 Oregon (L, 0-9 in 5 inn.), No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 6 UCLA, No. 10 Georgia, No. 11 Baylor, No. 16 Arizona State (W, 9-4), No. 17 Missouri, No. 21 Notre Dame, Northwestern (W, 5-4), Stanford (L, 9-10) and North Carolina. Eight of UT's 11 match-ups against ranked or receiving votes teams will take place during the opening month of February. Texas is 2-2 so far in 2015 in such contests.
