AUSTIN, Texas -- Ninth-ranked Texas Men's Tennis defeated Washington 6-1 on Friday night at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center.
The Longhorns (6-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead by earning the doubles point with wins a position Nos. 2 and 3 and went on to win 5-of-6 singles matches.
"I liked the way we started this match tonight. We worked really hard this week on our doubles and thankfully it showed in the match," head coach Michael Center said. "There was no hesitation in what we were doing in doubles and I thought that set the tone for the match."
Helping set that tone for the Longhorns was sophomore George Goldhoff. The reigning ITA Texas Region Rookie of the Year played in his first dual match of the season on Friday after recovering from injury. Goldhoff posted wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 5 singles to help lead Texas to its sixth consecutive win.
"It was nice to see George out there get two wins -- that added to our team's overall effort," Center said. "He brought a lot of energy and fire to the match tonight. It was contagious."
Senior All-American Søren Hess-Olesen cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over No. 78 Mitch Stewart at No. 1 singles to give Texas a 2-0 team lead. The 13th-ranked Denmark native improves to 7-1 against ranked opponents this season after wining his eighth consecutive singles match on Friday.
Freshman John Mee gave UT a 3-0 lead after wrapping up this third consecutive singles victory by defeating Washington's Joao Barra 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 6 position. Mee improves to 3-0 at No. 6 singles this season.
Senior All-American Lloyd Glasspool provided the clinching singles victory for the Longhorns by defeating Emmett Egger 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 2 position.
The match played to completion with senior Adrien Berkowicz maintaining a perfect dual match record (6-0) and Goldhoff picking up this first singles win of the dual match season in three sets.
"In the singles, I thought Washington was really good," concluded Center. "They have a nice team with a lot of fast athletes. We really got pushed but at the end of the day we played our most complete match so far this year."
Texas returns to action against Rice on Sunday at 1 p.m. Central at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center in Austin.
