A LOOK AT THE MATCHUP
• Texas trails the all-time series vs. Wichita State 2-3, with all three losses coming in the College World Series.
• In Austin, UT is a perfect 2-0 vs. the Shockers.
• Augie Garrido is 3-6 vs. WSU, but he has never faced the Shockers as head coach of Texas (all contests came at Cal State Fullerton).
• The two teams last met June 6, 1993 with the Shockers winning 7-6 in Omaha.
A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS
• Texas has fallen on hard times of late, losing seven games in a row with three of those coming in extra innings. During that stretch, the offense has scored 14 runs in 65 innings (avg. of 1.9 runs per nine innings) after averaging 5.6 runs in the first 25 games of the year.
• UT has played its best ball at home this season (12-4 record), scoring two more runs/game than on the road (5.8/3.8) while boasting a staff ERA of 1.74 (more on p. 3).
• Junior left fielder Ben Johnson leads the Big 12 in hits (52), multi-hit games (18), triples (7), slugging percentage (.586) and total bases (82), while Sr. right fielder Collin Shaw leads the league in doubles (14) and is tied for second in RBIs (26) (Chart on p. 3).
• Johnson has recorded multiple hits in 18 of the first 32 games this season, and has had six games with three or more hits thus far.
• For the year, the Longhorn bullpen holds a 1.98 ERA. Senior left-hander Kirby Bellow and junior lefties Travis Duke and Ty Culbreth lead the way, combining for a 1.50 ERA and six saves over 60 innings.
• Texas has 88 extra base hits (55 2B, 13 3B, 20 HR) through its first 32 games. At this point of 2014, the longhorns had 63 extra base knocks (45 2B, 11 3B, 7 HR).
• The Texas offense leads the Big 12 in triples (13), is tied for second in walks (134) and ranks tied for fourth in home runs (20)
• The pitchers are fourth in the league with a 2.94 ERA and their .241 batting average against ranks tied for second, while the defense ranks second in fielding percentage (.975).
• UT is outscoring its opponents 53-4 in the seventh and eighth innings, and is 12-0 when leading after seven frames.
