Kacy and Kody Clemens each went deep on Friday night and the Longhorns rolled to their fourth conference win.
MANHATTAN, Kan.—Six strong innings from righthander Morgan Cooper and a pair of two-run blasts by Kacy and Kody Clemens led the Longhorns to a decisive 6-3 win over Kansas State on Friday night in Manhattan.
The Longhorns (13-17, 4-3 Big 12) got the offense going early. In the second inning, Kacy Clemens picked up the first Texas hit of the ballgame and, after moving to second on a Patrick Mathis sacrifice, scored on a one-out single by Zane Gurwitz to make it 1-0.
The following frame, it was Kody Clemens who did the damage. Travis Jones led off the inning with a base knock and the younger Clemens blasted a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall to make it 3-0 in favor of the Longhorns.
K-State (13-18, 0-7 Big 12) got one back in the bottom of the third when the Longhorns couldn't complete the potential inning-ending double play, but the two-run lead once again stretched to three in the fourth when Jones squeaked a ball through the left side to score Gurwitz who had reached on a single.
Tres Barrera hit a resounding double off the left field wall with one out in the seventh and, not to be outdone by his brother, Kacy Clemens crushed an 0-1 offering over the right field scoreboard to give the Longhorns a commanding 6-1 lead. The two-homer night gave Texas its first multi-homer game of the season.
Cooper (2-1) cruised through six innings of work before being lifted with a 6-1 lead. The redshirt-sophomore allowed just four hits and one unearned run while walking one, hitting one and striking out seven on the night.
Connor Mayes tossed a scoreless seventh before allowing a one-out single and exiting in the eighth. Travis Duke came on to record one out before allowing a two-run homer to the Wildcats first baseman Jake Scudder that made it 6-3.
Chase Shugart followed and got the final four outs to seal the win and pick up his second save of the year.
Kacy Clemens finished with a career-high four hits while Jones reached three times and Gurwitz added a pair of knocks. Every Longhorn starter reached base safely at least once.
The Longhorns and Wildcats return to action for game two tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT. Lefthander Ty Culbreth (5-2, 2.31 ERA) will take the hill for Texas.
