No. 1 Men’s Golf advances to NCAA Championship match

The Longhorns will face No. 6 Oregon at Eugene Country Club on Wednesday.

EUGENE, Ore. — No. 1 Texas Men's Golf defeated No. 8 Oklahoma (4-1) and No. 4 USC (4-1) on Tuesday to advance to the 2016 National Championship match at Eugene Country Club. The Longhorns will make their first appearance in the NCAA Finals since 2012, meeting Oregon on its home course at 4:10 p.m. CT.
The match will be televised live on the Golf Channel with coverage beginning at 5 p.m. CT. Texas will seek its fourth National Championship all-time (1972, 1973, 2012).
All five golfers scored for the Longhorns during the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, with sophomore Doug Ghim and juniors Gavin Hall and Beau Hossler scoring in both rounds. Ghim was first to score in both matches, defeating OU's Max McGreevy in the morning, 7&6 and USC's Justin Suh in the semifinal round, 4&3.
In his first match, Ghim took an early lead on the first hole, maintained a 1UP advantage before extending his lead to 5UP on holes five, six, seven and eight. He made the turn at 5UP, following with victories on 10 and 11 to extend his lead to 7UP. He kept the lead for the remainder of the match, clinching on the 12th hole.
In his second match, Ghim and Suh stayed all square through the first three holes, until Ghim made the first strike, winning hole four to take a 1UP lead. He struck again, winning holes five and six to lead, 3UP. He dropped hole eight to make the turn with a 2UP lead, but fired back to win three-straight holes and clinch the match, 4&3.
Ghim will tee off at 4:50 p.m. CT, facing Oregon's Thomas Lim in the final round.
Hall also won both matches on the day, defeating OU's Brad Dalke, 4&3 in the quarterfinal round and USC's Jonah Texeira, 4&3 in the semifinals.
Hall started the day with a win on hole one to take an early 1UP lead. He extended his lead to 2UP on the third hole, but dropped the fourth to return to 1UP, keeping that lead until winning the ninth hole and making the turn at 2UP. He extended his lead to 3UP on 10, returned down to 2UP on 12, but won back-to-back holes on 14 and 15 to clinch the match on hole 15.
In the semifinal round, Hall and Texeira were all square through hole one, but Hall went on to win three-straight holes to take a 4UP lead through six. He lost the seventh hole for a 3UP lead at the turn, but regained the lead on 13 to clinch the match on 15.
Hall will be the first to tee off for Texas at 4:10 p.m. CT, taking on Oregon's Edwin Yi.
Hossler was the third Longhorn to win both matches, beginning with his defeat of OU's Blaine Hale, 1UP. The competitors were all square through the first two holes until Hale took a 1UP lead on hole three and stayed there through hole five. Hossler won the sixth hole to return to all square through the front nine before winning hole 10 to take a 1UP lead of his own. He followed with another victory on 13 to take a 2UP lead, but lost 14 to return to 1UP through 17. The match was decided before finishing on 18, giving Hossler a 1UP victory.
On the semifinal round, Hossler defeated USC's Andrew Levitt, 2&1 to clinch the win for Texas. He started strong, winning the first and second holes to take a 2UP lead, but lost three and four to return all square. Hossler struck again on five, but fell on six and again on eight to give Levitt a 1UP lead through the turn. Levitt followed with a victory on hole 11 to take a 2UP lead, but Hossler won 12, 14 and 15 to take the lead once again. He extended his lead on 16 to 2UP and closed the match on 17 to give the Longhorns the match.
Hossler is scheduled to take on Oregon's Zach Foushee, teeing off at 4:30 p.m. CT.
Sophomore Scottie Scheffler fell to Oklahoma's Luke Kwon in the quarterfinals, but bounced back with a victory over USC's Sean Crocker in the semifinal round, 1UP.
Scheffler trailed for most of the front nine in his semifinal match as Crocker led 2UP on the fifth hole, but made narrowed the lead to 1UP at the turn and won hole 10 to sit all square. Scheffler won hole 13 to take his first lead of the round, fell on 14 to return to all square, but earned a victory on 17 to take a 1UP lead as the match was clinched for Texas.
Scheffler will face off with Oregon's Aaron Wise at 4:20 p.m. CT.
Sophomore Taylor Funk had a crucial win for the Longhorns in the quarterfinal round, defeating OU's Grant Hirschman, 6&4.
Funk and Hirschman were all square through the first three holes before Funk won back-to-back holes to take a 2UP lead. He didn't look back from there, winning the eighth, 11th, 13th and 14th holes to clinch the second score of the day for the Horns.
Funk fell to USC's Rico Hoey, 6&5 in the semifinal match. He is set to tee off at 4:40 p.m. CT versus Oregon's Sulman Raza.
