Kacy Clemens goes deep twice in Baseball’s 4-1 win over UCONN

Michael Cantu added three hits and Morgan Cooper went seven strong innings in the series opening win.
AUSTIN, Texas—Texas Baseball (4-2) used seven strong innings from right-handed pitcher Morgan Cooper and two Kacy Clemens home runs to take a 4-1 win over visiting UCONN (4-2) on Friday evening at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
In a matchup of two of the nation's top pitchers, Cooper and the Huskies' Tim Cate, the Longhorns were able to strike first.
Junior catcher Michael Cantu, coming off his first long ball of the year in Wednesday night's game, hit a one-out double to lead off the fourth inning. First baseman Kacy Clemens followed it up with a two-run shot that put Texas out in front 2-0.
Two batters later, Patrick Mathis walked and stole a bag before Cate was forced out of the game with an injury. Joe Baker then followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Mathis and putting Texas up 3-0.
In Clemens' next at-bat in the sixth, the senior went yard once again, this time hitting the Taco Shack "free taco" bullseye in right field. Clemens' two-homer night is the first for a Longhorn since C.J Hinojosa went deep twice on May 16, 2015 at Baylor.
On the other side of the ball, Cooper dominated the Huskies lineup through six innings, only giving way in the seventh. UCONN opened the frame with a single and a double, but only managed to push one across thanks to a sac fly.
The Huskies also threatened in the fourth when, after allowing a single and a stolen base, Cooper induced a fly ball to center. Zane Gurwitz, making his first start of the season after missing the first five games with a hamstring injury, made the catch and fired a strike to third base to get the runner attempting to tag for the second out of the inning.
After a scoreless 1.1 innings from Tyler Schimpf, right-hander Chase Shugart entered to pick up his first save of the season.
The Longhorns and Huskies meet in game two tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. CT. Right-hander Kyle Johnston (1-0) will oppose fellow righty Will Montgomerie on the hill.
